While I don't agree with everything in the article, it got me thinking: What will happen when my iPod battery finally craps out? Will Apple service it for the low, low price of $199.00? or will they force me to buy a shiny new one?

iPod all the way

Umm... I don't know about you, but I bought my iPod to listen to music. For my needs, the iPod is still the best.

Battery life. I get nearly 8 hours easily. More than enough for my typical listening sessions. I'd be curious to see if that 20 hours for the Dell DJ was for typical use.

Recording. I don't need, or want, to record onto my iPod. I have my desktop for converting my CDs. Why would I record from radio? Lectures, perhaps, if I were a student, but I didn't that much even with my old Walkman recorder.

Jogging. I jog. When I'm on the treadmill, I don't have the iPod on me, so the skipping problem is irrelevant. Besides, I'd like to have more than a few songs at my fingertips, without having to stop and change CDs or memory cards. Also, I've left my iPod in my car's glove compartment with no problem, although I don't recommend it. I bet if you leave those CDs and player on your seat, in the sun, you'll have nice curly pieces of plastic in no time. :)

As for buying music online and transferring/syncing with the iPod (or any other player), is there anything better than iTMS? Find one if you can. :)

Yes, but it would be a cheap piece of plastic, no an expensive one:D

mymemory: i may not listen to every single song often, but i assure you i do hit almost every artist at least once a week, and it's sooo nice to be discussing an obscure song, then whip out your iPod and iTrip and play it for everyone... i've settled some arguements this way. by your logic, we should stick with CDs, and we should know ahead of time what music we'll want. the point of the iPod is all of your music with you, all of the time. unless you have too much music for the iPod, in which case i think carrying around CDs is *certainly* out of the question...

for me, there's no point to MP3 (or aac) players if you can't carry a LOT of music with you all at once. you're just getting lower quality music. i will never understand these people that buy 60 minute MP3 players...

there might be 5 gb iPod users out there who could answer this very question.

i would think, once that happens, it would be cheaper to get a new one... considering more product innovations...

Why is it impossible for CNET to write an article about Apple or Apple products without some type of slam involved? Even with a product like the iPod, which the author of the article acknowledges is the best on the market, it must be done in the context of what is wrong with Apple. If it was an isolated story or it was the same bias relative to other companies it would be one thing, but this is ridiculous. Do these guys all get Microsoft stock as part of their pay?

I do understand that. My point is still valid. Check out the last two weeks of CNET stories on Apple. I don't really think these guys are in Microsoft's pocket (at least not that directly.) I think there is a culture of dismissal of everything Apple at CNET and a few other places on the web. With iTunes, iTMS, iTunes for Windows, the G5, Panther, etc. Apple has been putting out some amazing products at an incredible clip, but to read what CNET says about it one would conclude it all is irrelevant.

"some people" should actually read the stories involved and respond to the points others make before calling others names.

Your point is not valid. Things have been coming out by Apple and they have not liked some of them, so then you think that they hate Apple in some way or are being paid off.

Think you hit this one right on the head.

i didn't do any name-calling. get your facts straight. or would you happen to fit into the "fanatics" catagory? if i offend you with the term "fanatic," then perhaps i'll refer to you as a zealot instead. either way, the shoe fits.

I am neither a "fanatic" or a "zealot," both of which I think qualify as name-calling. If you actually want to discuss CNet and its coverage of Apple, I'd be happy to oblige. If your intention is to start a "flame war" then I think I'll take Rower's advice and just "chill."

It amazes me that people come to a Mac forum and are surprised to find Mac "fanatics" or "zealots" here (or even people who defend Apple from time to time). Then they proceed to use the majority of their posts to complain about it.

It's like going to a Star Trek forum and criticizing everyone for liking Star Trek. What's the point?

So they suggest a different player or set of players to cambat each of the problems, but no one player for all of the problems. That doesn't help, because then you still have other problems with the replacement players. No logic.

C|net's reviews of Apple products have almost always been glowing, but some of the editorials on C|net have been very negative. Maybe these people never liked Apple to begin with? Maybe w/all the good stuff Apple has put out lately they are sick of hearing how great Apple is (a backlash if you will)? I dunno.

But the iPod article, while bringing up true short comings of the iPod, is presented in a very beligerant fashion which is why it has rubbed some people the wrong way. The writer seems almost mad that the iPod is so that even when he says something good about it it is a left handed compliment, "Of course, if you don't care about low battery life, aren't fond of jogging, have ample disposable income, don't need to record/encode music portably, and want to purchase music downloads only from the iTunes Music Store, then the iPod is the best the way to go."

Of course you can also look at that article in a positive light, it takes at least 5 other devices = 1 iPod. ;)

it's not my intention to start a flamewar. all i was saying is a lot of people here lash out at anyone who even has the slightest anti-Apple remark. frankly, i'm quite surprised you seem to think my comment was aimed solely at you. my comment was aimed at anyone who looks at any non-Apple oriented website with an extremely negative mindset. like i said, people are ignoring the good Apple coverage that's come out of CNet and only looking at the bad.

Thanks But No Thanks

Thank you Cnet, Without You I would've gotten a ipod(*Laugh*)I mean, instead of getting a mac product I could go with, for instance, a dell device that to me hands down looks like a reproduction of the ipod as all of a sudden people are beginning to create look alikes.

thats in My eyes, so don't take me too serious

Damn, those are some pretty fugly alternatives. Well, for me, it's 'cause I like MDs.
