That is just awful news, how sad. Brought tears to my eyes while reading such tragedy. My prayers go out to the family and friends. Don't even want to contemplate how that little 5 year old suffered. To have been locked with water pouring in, the agitation of the machine. :(

Why do parents leave children alone. What has happened that parents don't automatically know this. It will be important to know how the girl ended up in the washer and the machine turned on, that part isn't the machines fault. There should be an emergency release, which will probably be the manufacturers fault. :(

horrible news

i wouldn't be surprised to see the mother sue the company that makes the washers though, thats just the world we live in

Yeah I was thinkin the same thing... If it's not the 14 year old's fault that mother will probably have an attorney and a lawsuit coming pretty quick.

"Half their stuff. $2.2 million from the school."

The thing is there are good safety reasons for either not having a release or making it difficult to operate.

You will have people opening doors to hot soapy water and rapidly moving mechanical parts. Imagine all the slips and falls, third degree burns and dismemberments that that can and would entail.

I will be very interested to find out how the five year old ended up in the washer. Someone had to place the machine into a wash cycle. Although I fear that somehow the 14 year old brother is involved. The mother should have taken the 5 year old with her. 14 is just too young for that responsibility.

My fear is the mom did it and blamed the 14 year old.

After reading above about suing I amended my fear to the mother doing in an attempt to get a big settlement instead out of rage/stupidity.

Then again, I'm an optimist.

The front-loading, high-capacity commercial washer, which is manufactured by Milnor, locks airtight when the door is shut and coins are inserted, Sheffield said. The door on those units, he said, is programmed to not open until the cycle is complete.
Sort of has to make you wonder about how the darn thing started.

It was either one of two people who did the deed, and I personally would not fault the washing machine company.

Though I feel they should adopt a "stupid human law" to complement the "stupid motorist law" that we have locally.

There is only so much a manufacturer can do to combat stupidity ... you can plaster a product with all the warning labels and bubble wrap available on the planet. And somebody is still likely to sue the company for failure to provide sufficient notice and design the product to protect "them"

A similar story from today's news...

Another very sad and tragic accident. My prayers are with the family and friends. May Georgina Bywater rest in peace, because of the way she diesd is so unspeakable. Showing parent cannot let a toddler of there sight for a minute.

why didn't anybody pull the plug out? seems like the smart thing to do instead of searching for a rock, then again hindsight is a wonderful ting

The plugs are not always easy to reach.

Who would want somebody hanging wet clothes on a live wire.

Wouldn't pulling the plug keep the water in there, since the pump would not be able to remove the water? Unfortunatly, I don't think there was anything they could have done to save her other than what they attempted.

Of all the ways to die....

Kin Charged in Girl's Washer Death

(AP) - CHILHOWIE, Va.-A 14-year-old boy was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of his 5-year-old half sister last month in a coin-operated washing machine.

"He told his mother that night that he done it," the children's grandmother, Anna Billings, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
