The real performance gains are on the Neural and GPU sides these days - and that's a good thing. The M5s are showing the graphical powerhouse that Apple Silicon can be. By the time the M6 Max comes around, the GPUs will definitely be on par with at least the mid range offerings from AMD and NVidia. Been very impressed how quickly Apple is closing that gap.

What I missed in the comparison was how much the power consumption changes from the M1 to the M5. The changes in microarchitecture probably had a positive effect, but the increase in silicon size has the opposite effect.
Absolutely - but in the end larger silicon hurts marginally, but architecture refinements dominate positively.

Since the only thing thats actually and noticeably taxing my M1 MBA (best Apple computer I ever had, and that includes the original Retina MacBook Pro and a 68030 Performa) is Handbrake, I'm wondering about how much faster the Media Engine has become. Which set of numbers would represent this?
