slow wireless internet here also!

Hi. Thanks for useful info about slow wireless internet.

I have been spending hours to solve my slow-internet problem. So today, I decided to do everything in a perfect order, with no interference from old/previous configurations.
So my macbook is now completely "fresh/out of the box or say newborn". It is formatted and installed with OSX Leopard.

My question: What can be wrong in this test results?:

** Starting test 1 of 1 **
Connected to: miranda.ctd.anl.gov -- Using IPv4 address
Another client is currently being served, your test will begin within 45 seconds
Checking for Middleboxes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done
checking for firewalls . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done
running 10s outbound test (client-to-server [C2S]) . . . . . 158.0kb/s
Error in parsing tests results!

Most of my test end like this one:
running 10s outbound test (client-to-server [C2S]) . . . .
(this can go for about 20+ minutes!)

Information about internet:
Keep in mind, our internet is very similar to most airport internet. We have to login with username and password.
(I cannot tell what kind of router they use, but I guess the problem is my macbook as I can perfectly connect the network with no problem)
Furthermore we have to type in username and password to get access to Internet. Our user profile can allow 4 simultaneous users. Today we have two wireless pc (with windows) logged in, there is equal speed on both. If the one log out, the speed will double for the one still logged in. But if one macbook login, he will hardly have 40-80 kbs up and down at all. And the pc-users will not be affected. The speed for the mac user, will not change even when the pc users log out.
I guess/hope this problem is displayed on the test results above.

thanks in advance!

firefox fix

My web browsing speeds on my new MacBook Air have been abysmal, on both Safari and Firefox. My buddy just gave me a fix for Firefox, though, which seems to have worked great:

Within Firefox:
- Type "About:Config" into the browser web address/url bar
- After proceeding past the warning about voiding your warranty (presumably on Firefox), you should see four items, 3 of which have a value of "false" and 1 of which has a number value (probably "4") in the farthest right column. Change each "False" to "yes" and the "4" to "30" simply by double clicking on each of those original values.
- Exit Firefox and re-launch it and it should be lightning fast!

I'm dying to try this as I'm looking for a fix for my slow wi-fi connection. Loved my MacBook Pro the first few months and then suddenly my connections run so slow I get dropped. I went the the Firefox page you described, however there were about 60 items listed with true/false or digits in the far right. Any more descriptions of the page you are referring to? I'd love to check it out. Thanks!!

Problem solved with slow Mac’s on internet.

I had this problem several times. Each time i had this problem when i was downloading torrents (with a lot of seeds) in Limewire or other download programs. My router is then getting very slow until you restart it. Restart you Mac and it has normal speeds again in your webbrowser until you start Limewire again. I had this problem only by wireless use.

Changing ethernet settings

The following was suggested
"So I went to system preferences -> network -> ethernet -> advanced -> ethernet .. and changed the "automatic" setting to the following:

Configure: Manually
Speed: 100baseTx
Duplex: full duplex
MTU: Standard (1500)

This worked for me, and the wireless and direct-to-modem internet is screaming. I am using an Airport Extreme Base Station with Comcast cable modem. Hope this helps."

I can't find anyplace to change the Speed or Duplex settings. I'm on a new MacBook Pro

works like magic!!

forget messing with the DNSs .. problem is mostly due ti Ip6 to Ip4 conversion..
very easy fix just try and see the difference...

open firefox
type "about:config" on address bar
don't worry about the careful sign - click "I'm ok"..
type "ipv6" on filter bar
double click "network.dns.disable.ipv6 - false and make it "true"
quit firefox - with alt_Q (total quit)
restart your firefox and enjoy the fast surfing...

People, the fix quoted above works works works and its really easy to do - even I managed to do it and i know sweet nothing about pc's and mac's.. The only problem I have now is that Im worried I invalidated the warranty (you get a warning saying so when you're about to do the change).. or, worse still, that i've opened up my mac to outside attacks or stuff like that... brrrr.. anyone out there who can provide me with some re-assurance??!! PLEEEAZE!!

"Macs just work" Roll on floor screaming!!

Thank you everyone for posting these fixes! Brand new 2010 macbook pro i5 right out of the box "just works" SLOW!! Now I can almost feel better about buying a computer that's twice the cost and half the speed of the sony vaio I should have bought, which also had blueray and an hdmi output! I do like the aluminum body thogh. Maybe it will survive when I eventually throw it across the room...

Caveat emptor...C'est la vie...

Anyone want to buy a very slightly used macbook?

People, there is no "fix" for slow internet other than your internet connection.

If I may suggest, get a faster internet connection, there is nothing wrong with your MB...

Hi, First of all, Thanks for all the info listed here.

I use a Macbook 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo with SL 10.6.5 software. I am connected to the internet thru phoneline DSL connection @ 512Kbps. All was going great but recently I have noticed that websites are very slow to open and videos do not stream completely (they shut off after 1-2 minutes)
I cannot understand the problem as I have tried everything listed here in the forums.

Can anyone help me....I am a techie but not a geek....

Thanks

Can not be and internet speed issue.

Sorry i really have to disagree with you on that one, how is it possible that when i download a 9 MB Word document it takes my Mackbook pro 11 minutes to download it, but only 2 minutes with my PC. It can not be a Internet speed connection issue it must be the Mac wireless adapter.

Thank you! This worked for me!!!! Yipeeeee!

My friend had serious speed issues with her wireless connection. I did a speed test on her MacBook and the results were puzzling. Even pages like www.google.com took 10-15 seconds to load (on a fast DSL connection).

The site for the speed test came up very slowly. There seemed to be a big delay. Once loaded however, the download speed was blazing fast.

I suspected problems with the DNS and attempted to set up OpenDNS as referenced in this thread. It turns out there were a couple of entries in the DNS control panel already. So rather than add more, I deleted all the DNS entries except the wireless routers DNS which was greyed out.

Apply changes, restart Firefox/Safari and VOILA! The browser has no more 'delay' before loading webpages.

This worked. You are a god. Thank you.
