I recently bought a camera connection kit...now I'm regretting it.

I've learned about the iOS 4.2 update reducing the port power from 100mA to 20mA and therefore reducing the ability of many USB drives to work.

I've heard about the powered USB hub trick but that really defeats the whole "portability" aspect of my iPad.

I have a few SD cards which still work (SDHC format) and one of my flash drives (4gb) works as well. What I am thinking is that some of the flash drives with a low enough power requirement will work on the kit, notably those that don't have flashy LED lights indicating it's working.

I'm looking into getting an 8gb Cruzer Blade flash drive both for my own use as well as a workaround for this power issue. The cruzer drive has no flashy lights or anything (from what I can tell) so I'm wondering if it will work.

Anyone know which flash drives might work with the camera connection kit? Notably which ones will have a low enough power consumption to be under the 20mA limit.

testing my USB flashdrives with my iPad 2

what does NOT work,
a 32 Gb lexar
a 8 Gb Verbatim

what DOES work
ativa 4GB (Capless, NOT the newer 'readyboost' one)
no name 2GB (show freebie) with flashing red light,

tempting to suggest what works and does not work is a function of size but this is a small sampling I happen to have

update 4GB sandisk cruzer does NOT work, so much for size

Do you have a pic or model # for the Ativa?

Refresh me, what type files can be read this way?
can you move files from iPad to flash drive?
Mp3. Flac, photos, certain movie formats? What programs are used to open files? Does this require a jailbreak?

The iPad has to be JB'ed. I use iFile (get it from Cydia) to move files (any type of file) from iPad to SD card or USB thumb drive and vice versa. Also use it to move my files to the directories of my apps without using iTunes.

Encrypted that works low power?

I tried a pin coded universal encrypted drive, but there isnt enough power now to run thru the camera connection kit. Any ideas to keep it encrypted but also usable on other formats such as mac or pc? Thanks

Is this issue still present in 4.3.x or was the power drop a 4.2.x issue only?

I plan on extensively using a flash drive once jailbroken.

Yup

Yes it works, i'm using IOS 6.1.2... it took me awhile but was able to figure out the "amazing" cck use mod. But i'm trying to figure out which particular usb drives would work, i'm trying to be a little cautious with what i buy, so i can buy lots..

Hey iOS lovers,

why has nobody used this thread again?
I m searching quite a lot of hours finding USB sticks under 20mA, which are compatible with the ipad cck.

Do you guys know if there is a list out there?

(wont use SD cards)
äthanks and all the best

You really need to know what's compatible with your unit so that you won't regret buying anything like that again. SD Cards are good to use for iOs than Flash drives.
