GPS is not coming in this generation of iphones. There needs to be a hardware chip that allows GPS.

Not necessarily true. They could potentially create an add-on accessory for the iphone that lets it handle GPS. But yeah, the current iPhone by itself will not be able to do GPS.

I believe GPS functionality could easily be added to Google Maps. There are several miniature bluetooth GPS receivers available. I would think that a software update to Google Maps and ability to pair with the bluetooth receiver would allow the "you are here" feature to Maps.

What's your source on this? I thought Flash was a sure thing, and that GPS needed additional hardware, so it's out, no?

GPS will need additional hardware, but I believe that the additional hardware will be added to future versions of the iPhone, but not the 1G version we currently enjoy. Flash is not a sure thing, I have not heard anyone at apple (read steve jobs) say that flash will be added. It is expected as it is a big part of the current WWW. However, Apple may want to try to leverage its own multimedia gimmicky software on the iphone to make the same sort of web pages. It would depend on how close Apple wants to work with Adobe, which was really good in the past but seems to be slowly eroding over the past few years.

So I say maybe...

Apple has vector-based animation software for use with websites?

Supposedly, and this is NOT firsthand knowledge, some of the things that can be done with flash can be done with quicktime, and some of the things it can't do could be added in future releases relatively easily. I can't recall who I heard it by, for some reason I want to say I heard it on one or more of the Twitcasts, maybe macbreak (weekly)? Not sure at the moment, maybe if I get motivated enough I will go and find the reference, but I don't really care enough about flash to really care if it is added or not.

I'd get really excitied at this point over a serial port protocol for bluetooth so we could use external GPS receivers....

Got a buddy with an iPhone drooling for stereo bluetooth.

I don't miss MMS, but seems easy enough to take care of with software. I know many people on this forum would love it.

Is this kind like how the iPhone needs a hardware upgrade to get flash memory?
