Holy poop, this site will be flooded with negative comments in a few minutes when the main page gets updated with Thinksecrets reports of less than exciting updates coming to powerbooks tomorrow.

Good god, you ain't kiddin'. Talk about disappointing. Radeon 9700? I had one of those in a PC laptop THIS TIME LAST YEAR.

HaHaHa, this is hillarious.

Why?

A) it's funny that so many of you are jumping the gun and assuming that the iPod flash/micro/whatever isn't going to have a screen

B) that so many of you Apple apologists are making excuses for the fact that this thing could be sans screen.

You people crack me up.

Cheers. :D

It comes loaded with 100 free songs randomly loaded from iTunes. Every one comes out of the box different. Neat.

Now that WOULD be random...but also the biggest ever marketing stunt pulled in the history of MP3! WOW! Nice idea...I take my hat off to you

I'll believe it when I see it. A slogan like "Life is random" just doesn't fly in my book. This is another fake story.

Macity is a serious mac news site, they aren't part of the "rumour mill". that banner i not a fake story, it's a picture of the Moscone center from the outside. As far as the iPod "micro", the guy says it is all white, imagine if infact it uses that patent that Apple filed a while ago , the light-mood changing sensor thing , i don't know if you guys remember but something to do with the whole object changing colors or somethng, that could be cool, hence maybe the random thing.. bah- we'll see

EDIT :Here is the description of the patent that Apple filed :
The invention pertains to electronic devices capable of dynamically changing their ornamental or decorative appearance, i.e., the outer appearance as seen by a user. The electronic devices generally include an illuminable housing. The illuminable housing, which includes at least one wall configured for the passage of light, is configured to enclose, cover and protect a light arrangement as well as functional components of the electronic device. The light arrangement, which generally includes one or more light sources, is configured to produce light for transmission through the light passing wall(s) of the illuminable housing. The transmitted light illuminates the wall(s) thus giving the wall a new appearance. That is, the transmitted light effectively alters the ornamental or decorative appearance of the electronic device. In most cases, the light is controlled so as to produce a light effect having specific characteristics or attributes. As such, the electronic device may be configured to provide additional feedback to the user of the electronic device and to give users the ability to personalize or change the look of their electronic device on an on-going basis. That is, a housing of the electronic device is active rather than passive, i.e., the housing has the ability to adapt and change. For example, the light may be used to exhibit a housing behavior that reflects the desires or moods of the user, that reflects inputs or outputs for the electronic device, or that reacts to tasks or events associated with operation of the electronic device.

Displayless iPod works for activity oriented people

Think about the main target audience for this product, and it clarifies why a displayless iPod makes sense. Flash mp3 players are perfect for active individuals due to the lack of any moving parts. Have any of you tried to do real activities with your hard-drive based iPod?

If you're an individual serious about your activity, but happen to have a sense of style, then a displayless iPod priced aggressively against other flash players fits your need. I work out, climb, play or do some other activity where I'd like to have a small rugged mp3 player along. I'm currently using a Rio because that's what they're made for, but I NEVER look at the display other than to make sure the damn thing is on. Once it is, I'm only concentrating on the task at hand.

Cheers.

Heheheeee :)

- The Headless Ghost of Phil Schiller!
- Headless SEXBOTS!
- Headless LESBIAN NINJAS!
- Headless 23" Cinema Displays!

Yeah, OK... I read Crazy Apple Rumors a bit too much. But it's the perfect antidote to how these forums get on occasions like this...

But what about Think Secrets sources that say it will have a screen that is the same width as the iPod mini's but two lines shorter.

Maybe Apple will go for the whole mp3 player market and announce a 512MB player at $99 with no screen and 1GB and 2GB players at $149 and $199 with screens?

When I was in college I lived in a small campus-based town, where everything was pretty much within walking distance. I didn't have alot of money for a car, so I decided I would look into buying a high quality but relatively inexpensive bike.

I went to my favorite discussion board, CarRumors.com and posted that I was interested in getting a bike to make efficient quick trips around the city, and save on gas, parking, and car payments.

Fortunately the CarRumors.com community talked me out of it.

"Nobody would ever buy a bike," they pointed out. "Who in their right mind would go around on something that has to be self-powered with pedals, has no engine, doesn't use gas, has no steering wheel (how will you navigate around town with it??!), has only two wheels instead of 4, uses handbrakes instead of a foot pedal, has no enclosure over you whatsoever, and costs at least $100?"

I felt so silly...all I wanted to do was get from one place to another, but I was so naive to believe that different products could serve different purposes to different people with different needs in different situations. Obviously I needed a car. They were right...nobody would ever buy or need a bike. I don't even know why they bother making bikes, or scooters or motorcycles for that matter. Cars are best for all things to all people all the time.

Man am I stupid.

Get off your high horse. If you don't want to read posts by people discussing a rumor, don't read the thread.

The people discussing the screen issue aren't making this up....this was reported by another website. Whether or not this is true is irrelevent. People are discussing what they think of a screenless iPod. Some people would find a screenless iPod useful, they're not making excuses for anything. If you don't like rumor discussions, or think that anyone supporting a mac product when you wouldn't like it is an apologist, feel free to take a f*cking hike. either way, you look like a dumbass when you come on here and gripe. If you don't like Apple supporters and discussions of rumors, don't read the damn thread.

Cheers! :D

Two simple explanations:

1. ThinkSecret's "reliable sources" are wrong. They have been right a lot -- AND wrong a lot! They said the original iPod Mini would start at $100  (Which puts their $499 headless iMac into perspective... Wishful thinking?)

2. The Italian site didn't quite get what they were looking at. The poster probably only showed one view of it, folded and behind shiny glass. Mistakes are possible.

As a 60 GB car owner, I can still appreciate a 2 GB bike :)

I seriously doubt that they actually had pictures of anything other than the banner. There's nothing Apple can do to stop someone from taking pictures of something that is in plain sight. That's why they've always kept their booths and displays under wraps.

Hehehehe, funny. Yepp, to the headless all things seem random.
Add to that a headless legal department and... oh well.
If it's really the randomly changing colours they're referring too... oh no, please not. What on earth has that got to do with life ??? All the colours of life aren't random, so what the heck? Apple's advertising is sooooo over the top... gosh. Man, couldn't they get some Brit to do the advertising, something along the line of 'might actually amuse you' or the like... ;)

...Right. Keep in mind most normal people (The people who companies market to, not the extremely surly and vocal 0.1% of the internet.) have a very small collection of music on their computer, a tiny device that would play all of their favorite music which could be dropped, thrown in a school bag, be smashed with books...

When you think of the flash iPod, screen or no screen, as an average consumer and not an angsty Mac fanboy, you'll see it in an entirely different light.

Wha, Whaaa, Whaaaaat?

"normal people" have very smal music collections on their computer? Clearly, you don't know many "normal people." :)

None of the "normal people" I know would buy any iPod without a screen. Even cheap $40 CD players have some kind of screen, albeit primitive.

Doesn't Apple own some patents related to voice recognition?

If so I hope it covers other languages than english, because I, as a froggie, have such a hard time successfully triggering the OSX speech recognition 'what time is it?' event, that I can't even begin to imagine how on earth I'll be able to control my playlist...

:D :D :D

OK, I haven't been around all that long, but this is easily the most hilarious post I have ever read on MR. And he has a point. Seriously, though, it brings back images of trying to teach my Italian friend to get his Mac to "Tell me a joke."

I'm rooting against you for a XM one ;) so we cancel each other out.

XM already has a small player. Sirius is smaller and growing - I think a perfect match to bring iPods success to bear.

If it is XM, I would not by. Maybe they'll give you (gasp!) choice!?

Since nobody is talking about this, it ain't gonna happen but I can dream!

Random = lower cost!!

The answer has been staring us in the face!!

"Random" isn't just marketing, and it's not about shuffle-play... It allows Apple to release a MUCH nicer iPod at a MUCH lower cost!

Consider this:

* Half the size of a Mini.
* Smaller wheel, smaller screen--but a color screen.
* 2 x 2 GB flash cards inside. 4 GB capacity.
* Voice recorder and AM/FM/weather band radio.
* Camera-phone module with dual satellite radio receiver snaps on--for both XM and Sirius. Total device size is like a Mini then.
* 6-in-1 flash reader for direct photo transfer.
* Three pairs of wireless earbuds.
* All that, plus an auto charger, FM transmitter, and deluxe carry case included in the box.
* 72 hour battery life. Charges in 20 minutes.
* Lifetime warranty.
* Price: $49.

Am I crazy? No!

You buy it, and one chance in fifty gets you an iPod when you open the box. The other forty-nine people get spring-loaded snakes.

It's fun! It's cost-effective! And it's RANDOM!

That's what Apple innovation is about.

The 1GB device would hold around 250 songs, right?

I think users could get by without a display. I'd probably vote to include one but I can see this possibly shipping without one. This would be Apple's way of forcing users to use iTunes to create specific playlists. Some users (those with a small library) will be fine with this. You create a bunch of playlists, each with only around 10-20 songs and then you send those down to the flashPod. You can then navigate between playlists and between songs. You shouldn't need a display when dealing with just 10-25 songs at a time. You should be able to identify your playlists. We lived with LPs/cassettes/CDs with no metadata for decades.

The more "sinister" angle is this...Apple has always been against these small capacity players. (Just like they've been against $499 computers.) They/Steve has felt that you are so limited in the music you can take with you. That is why the iPod was so huge. Here is your *entire* collection in the palm of your hand. This could be Apple's way of hooking users with a still cool yet limited product. Once they get hooked on the coolness and the fact that it just works they then think that they'd like to have a big iPod and they upgrade.

This is a halo inside the iPod halo.

But if anyone can pull this off, it's B&O

Just wait for Apples reply.

Do you know what's ironic? The original iPod scroll wheel design (1G, physical scroll wheel) was a rip-off from a B&O phone... HA!

However, kudos for Apple for making successive evolutions of that design concept, the clickwheel is absolutely brilliant!

Yeah, I agree

When iPods dropped in price last time they dropped by what, $30? Waiting months for a $30 decrease in price is being cheap. Sorry.

I'm with you on this. I like inexpensive stuff as much as the next person but if you financial situation is so tight that 100 bucks or less makes a *big* difference, then you should be spending your money on important things and not something totally optional like an iPod.
