No screen? Thanks but no. I was thinking I might want to pick up a second cheap 'o flash iPod for the gym. Not without a screen though. Short of the device reading back the track in your headset...I think not.

What if there is a very small screen on the remote, inline with the headphone cord maybe?

That was my first thought, since I know Sony has MP3 players with little screens on the headphone cord... But then, where is the "Life is Random" phrase coming from?

I'm sorry but this has to be the most stupid forum in the history of macrumors!

No mp3 player has ever been built without a scree to my knowlage, and I think you'll find no consumer in their right mind would buy one.

Haha this is exactly the kind of reasoning that will be disproved tomorrow.
"No one in their right mind would buy a mp3 player for $499"...

Sure, if you keep your head under a rock you will never have seen one.

Take a peek at this one:

And it's MacFriendly too:

It's stainless steel and sells for about the price of an iPod photo, but has an SD card slot, zo that's not much storage.

But if anyone can pull this off, it's B&O

Just wait for Apples reply.

Maybe if the flash pod speaks the track name, it also has a "Magic 8 Ball" function that speaks random advice for your daily routine. Every time you pause a track you get some handy reassurances. Life would truly be Random in that respect.

;)

People like me who've spent $630 on a phone that does nothing apart from slide up from the middle. Fashion statment, yes i know sad

This will be the antithesis of the iPod. From complete control to 'random'. hmm... only a day to go, I guess

who cares i have an ipod, anyone willing to spend $150 for a flash based mp3 player is already an idiot in my mind. however i suppose knowing apple they'll come up with something interesting, they seem to indicate a different shape such as slim and like a remote control. could be interesting, just a small little stick almost with some buttons on it.

Party Shuffle for the iPod?

I almost always use Party Shuffle for iTunes and always use shuffle on my iPod. Lack of a screen, esp. for a device I'd use for running and working out isn't a major issue for me. Of course, I also ponied up the $250 for the green mini instead of getting a bigger iPod for just $50 more.

Guess we'll find out soon.

o well not long to wait and find out then is it !!

either apple is really smart with all the lawsuits and stuff or they are losing the plot a little - time will tell

When will Macrumors go to the live feed on tuesday as i'm planning my day around it now ?????

A MP3 player this size needs no screen, switching albums/playlists and songs is perfectly doable without a screen. Remember, a music player is for listening to music, not staring on the screen...

For many people, these basic functions with 250 songs or so (15 to 20 CDs) with a handful of playlists is perfectly ok.

If you don't like that you can always upgrade to an iPod mini, or an iPod or an iPod photo...

So my guess at the specs: 1GB Flash memory, USB/USB 2.0 connectivity (no FW), no screen, buttons: play/pause, volume up/down, next/prev playist, next/prev song. Maybe some way to switch next/prev playlist to next/prev album, next/prev artist and next/prev genre.

Maybe iTunes on the PC/Mac could voice-synthesize some spoken Titling for playlists, and the iPod micro (?) could speak these to help you navigating, the technogly ist there...

I'm cool with random. As long as it's shuffling my playlist, I would be delighted with a screenless iPod! It would be like listening to a radio station programmed by moi.

I cannot believe that people would be so down on a flash-based iPod without a screen. It's a great idea.

It's intended use would be for active times when you do not need to be scrolling through all your songs (like when you are at the gym). I personally, would be picking one up the second they come out for my daily ski workout. I'm tired of the bulk of my 2G in my pocket.

If you really want a screen and full-featured player, you can pick up an iPod.

Anyway, this is by far and away the most conclusive rumor I have seen. Blows away the ridiculous iHome hoax.

I'm going to trust Apple on this one. Last year when the iPod mini was announced a lot of people complained and kept saying how it was going to be a failure, blah blah. Now look at what the iPod mini became.

I know a lot of people who would consider buying the iPod described here, and others who would look at it, decide it's not what they want and go for a mini or a 4G iPod, but at least it would have caught their attention toward an iPod.

The entire Philips Wearable flash based line of mp3 player have no screen. The latest refreshes may (I haven't seen them) but the last lot, as of summer 04, didn't. I know, I had one (lost my iPod on holiday & was waiting for a replacement to arrive. Longest. Month. Of. My. Life.!!)
So it is entirely possible that the iPod Flash has no screen. But as many other have pointed out, its a bit different navigating through 200+ songs without a screen than going through 12+ on a 64MB flash player.....

So I gues that I'll have to make do ( :D ) with my iPod mini for the gym...

How different would this be to a CD multi changer in a car, the user could pre program 10 preset playlists and switch between them. Within each playlist the user could then forward and back track, maybe even a button that cycles repeat options.

If the price was right, I think this would be a very useful machine, imagine the battery life if it didn't have a screen.

Just trying to use some intelligence.

Small LCD screens with no backlight don´t have high power consumption, so this is not an issue for the iPod's battery life (look at digital wrist watches for instance, they can last over a year with a tiny watch battery).

Also, somebody said the screen could be in the remote... I don´t think so. This thing IS the remote. Why the hell would you want to carry a remote for a player that´s about the size of a pendrive (and it really would be that small with no screen).

I think the lack of a screen is mayor bummer for this iPod, I know I wouldn´t want one, but I also think it is possible to make it happen; maybe with the regular controls in the iPod, and it feedbacks with voice? But then again, it would be a lot cheaper to put a freaking LCD screen than a voice synthesizer... or not? I can´t wait ´till tomorrow! :)

I'll believe it when I see it. A slogan like "Life is random" just doesn't fly in my book. This is another fake story.

Nike mp3 player - no screen

No mp3 player has ever been built without a scree to my knowlage, and I think you'll find no consumer in their right mind would buy one. And if it was voice activated or had some sort of voice scrolling, could you think how long that would take to scroll through songs! not to mention the fact that you'd have to remember every song on your mp3 player.

Guys c'mon use your inteligence and stop perpetuating a lie

Jason

I have a Nike MP3 player that has no screen and, if it were not for its tiny 128MB capacity, I would still use it. There is an inline remote that is optional that contains a one-line LCD matrix that is maybe 15 chars across that displays the name of the song. The base unit has only "Play", "Forward", "Back", and "Pause". It works just fine.

In addition, I have a couple of playlists that are <1Gb that would be fine to be played randomly while working out, walking to work, or doing some other mindless activity. Think about the current iPod remote - it has no screen and I think people use it just fine.

yeah well their intended market for such a device is not ipod owners looking for a second mp3 player. it's people looking to get their hands on a cool mp3 player for the first or second time i would imagine. I say screw all this just start selling the mini for $199.

obviously market research showed that the younger Lindsay Lohan demographic really listens to mostly 1 style of music, kinda like a radio station that plays the same RUBBISH all the time. hence they wouldnt need playlists like iPod mini or iPod users.

very smart apple... no one saw this comin. not even daPlume. NO SCREEN, PURE RANDOM... whoa... steve jobs is p*owning.
