Alternative: install the ClickToFlash Safari plugin. There's a setting that lets you force YouTube to display H.264 video instead of Flash. It's great :D
OMFG:

Awesome! You just made my day. And there's even a direct download link. No more keepvid-stuff. :D

Awesome plug-in but how do you make the H.264 video full-screen??

*EDIT*

Found it, before the video starts playing there is a small options icon in the top left corner where you can select to play in full-screen using QT.

I have the same issues as the OP on a clean SL installation. About 20% more CPU utilization on a C2D.

Thanks for the ClickToFlash reference! Awesome plugin!

Yeah, ClickToFlash really is great, but we shouldn't be in a situation where this sort of thing is necessary. I really wish Adobe (and Apple) would get a move on and fix Flash Player's awful performance in OS X.

I'm guessing that it's the same issue preventing the iPhone OS from having Flash in its Safari browser. iPhone OS is built on OS X, afterall.

My guess is that Steve will hold out on Flash for the iPhone forever, and purposely sabotages it in OS X in the hopes that Adobe just gives up and stops with Flash altogether :)

Which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing ...

Well, as long as we don't end up using Microsoft Silverlight... Actually, even Silverlight for Mac doesn't have these issues. Maybe it would be better! :p
