iCloud is a relatively small amount of storage. Even if you pay for more, don't you max out at 20GB? iCloud is all about having all of your information available on all of your devices without having to specifically sync each device. It's not really about replacing local storage of large files (which tend to be media and apps).

What about iTunes match? I don't use the service, so I'm not too clear on it. My understanding was that you didn't need your music locally to use that.

You don't need the music locally, but that is not iCloud. That is a completely different service. One that you HAVE to pay for to use.
 
Even if it was, while using music in the cloud does it not download locally as you play it?

I really see iCloud more as a service with specific functionality and not a storage replacement.

Didn't realize it, but the camera roll and apps really take up most of my storage with my use. I'm sure that may vary from person to person.
