I had a slow running imac so i rebooted it.

It wouldn't start. Instead, it showed a flashing folder icon.

The apple genius said that the hdd had gone.

So i bought another and installed it myself.

Now, after bootup, i still get the same flashing icon.

I don't have the Lion CDs coz I downloaded the OS.

Resetting PRam and pressing option+R did nothing.

Any ideas?

You didn't mention what Mac model you have or if it came with Lion preinstalled. If so, you can use Lion Internet Recovery.
