my video card passes the test on my install disc. should i take it in anyways? It's really bad right now, but the computer has been on for 6 days.
It can't hurt to take it in, my new logic board fixed it for me aside from the embedded video artifacts when I zoom in. I tested the same zooming in on embedded video on a friends Santa Rosa MBP the other night, and his flashed artifacts as well, so I'm hoping it's a driver issue that 10.5.7 will fix... Again, I'd probably take the computer in if I were you.

I have been scrolling through menus, web pages and playing embedded video unplugged for half an hour now and am not getting this effect. I'll keep trying, but one of the reasons I'm doing this is my book was held for three weeks before delivery supposedly because of an expected firmware update. Maybe I have the fix? Who knows, maybe it takes time to show up too, I've only had my Macbook Pro for 12 hours now....

It doesn't happen on every uMBP. Also, for me it only started happening after the first week.

In Safari, go to History and then go to a day with lots of history. It's really long text lists that it does it with, I've never had any problems with scrolling on webpages or embedded videos.

Also, make sure your computer is unplugged when you do it - otherwise it probably won't do the flashing.

I just tried this on another MBP a 15" 2.4 uMBP (10.5.6) 2gb memory on both the 9400 & 9600 (with & without being plugged in)
did not get the same flashing i did while using the 17" uMBP

so im not sure if that helps or not for you...

Something else, which is good news - just tested Snow Leopard (10A354) and the flashing is gone. No work around necessary.

I have a 2008 MBP and don't have this problem plugged in or on battery. However it's having other problems. I just ordered a 24" iMac so I can send my MBP back to Apple for repair. :\

So...stay away from the new UMBPs or?

10.5.7 appears to have fixed the problem... I'll post back if I get the problem again in the future.

I have this "problem" on mine, same issue, plugged in it does not happen, unplugged when scrolling with those huge lists I get those "flashies". I'm on 10.5.7 fyi.

There's some problem that causes the flashies if Quartz GL is disabled. To enable it:

1. Install the Developer Tools. You can find them on your Leopard disk as "option install" stuff.
2. Open Quartz Debug. Spotlight is the easiest way to open it.
3. Go to Tools -> Enable Quartz GL.
4. Force quit Quartz Debug.

That's what I did, and Quartz GL has been enabled system-wide ever since. The menus don't flash anymore, and it stays this way even after restarting my computer.
