Has anyone put together a package or script that will allow me to flash my refurb 1,2 to 2,1 firmware? It seems that the version of the firmware that is on the refurb machines is not recognized by the updater.

Why are you needing to update the firmware? With firmware updates, it's really best to not update them, unless you are experiencing a specific issue the update it supposed to address.
The update is for processor recognition and (supposedly) some other issues. There are a lot of people who have flashed their 1,1 to 2,1. I wanted to try this update. The flasher utility can also revert the FW back to the original version. According to the old threads at Netkas the 1,1 and 2,1 are identical other than processors and FW. There were people who mentioned that they were unable to flash their refurb machines because of a version check (the refurbs got a newer version of the FW than the updater recognized).

There is no specific need to update the FW in a 1,1 to a 2,1 unless you've swapped to incompatible processors. In any case, first check the F/W you currently have -> About This Mac -> More Info -> will say right in system profiler "BOOT ROM VERSION". Just download the applicable installer from Netkas and click update.
BTW, OP says you can downgrade at will? I was thinking of going back to 1,1 for ID purposes in certain benchmarks. Is it safe considering I've upgraded to X5355s?

The threads over at Netkas indicate that the refurb machines are way our in left field and that there's a lot of manual manipulation required to get the updater to put the 2,1 FW on them.
Yes, I'm considering changing processors, so I want to have a way to make my machine recognize them if the FW I have now does not.
I'm not at that machine right now, but I recall that the System Profiler noted that it was manufactured in 2008. I suppose that was when it was refurbished, and I got it shortly after that as a paid replacement for the DP G5 that I had that would never work correctly for the three years I had it.

I'm not too sure about refurb machines but the Mac Pro 1,1 recognizes the X5355s with 1,1 firmware. It's a cosmetic issue where it shows "2 x 2.66GHz Unknown" in about this mac. You can easily edit aboutthismac.strings using TextEdit if you want it to show "2 X 2.66GHz Quad Core" instead.
That's the only method I know of without updating FW on any Mac Pro 1,1 machine.
