You're assuming it uses the exact same technology for identification as the high security scanners, which it may not. Guess what? Voice recognition sucked 5 years ago too, not so much anymore.

On the flip side, what would you do if in a freak industrial accident you had all your fingers cut off and you could no longer access your phone?

Then you will use the secondary security measure you will be required to setup to unlock your phone. The fingerprint scanner will not be the only access method. Biometrics always require another method in case of failure. If Apple doesn't do it, then it would be a huge failure on their part.

Surly you can pick which ever finger you want, Keep your unlock finger secret or use a toe that would throw them off a bit. Might be a market for finger print unlock fingers that you can keep locked away in a box.

The scanner is in the home button. Presumably any case designed for the 5s will leave that accessible. It's a major feature; case designers are going to account for it.

The only real flaw to the fingerprint scanner is the now non-ability to use waterproof cases with the phone. Other than that, you're talking silly.
