glad to hear that your Mom got that ring off her finger in time.

i'd be really freaked out if i had a ring and then found that i couldn't get it off...

LOL, :D that bonsai kitten thing was hilarious... i hate cats!! :D but, it's probably a good thing that it was a fake, but damn funny stuff! :D

That isn't really that bad, I have seen much worse things on a days work, as a Radiographer. At University I had to work in a Hospital of my choosing, which was Wagga Base hospital in Southern NSW, Australia. On my first day as a trainee, two adolescents were dirt biking on their farm (Wagga is a rural town) and one of them snapped their right arm, and had the bone sticking out from the skin. I had to X-Ray the poor bugger. Then there was the car accident victim with bits of her skull missing when she hit the back window of her ute...

Those are bad but are in a different context. Those are accidents that happen. This was a deformation of the body that was allowed to go on due to negligence. For some reason this sort of thing just seams a lot worse. Kind of like a large parasite laying it's eggs in your tear duct and .........

There's a mature student in my med class who's studying for his degree for a second time(got kicked out years ago) and he told us loads of stories about patients who came in when he was on the wards. There were a few with conditions like this.eg benign tumours of testes which result in them being the size of a football. Strangely enough, people can often not seek help out of fear.

As a nurse I have actually seen a patient like that. Patient's can react strangely to medical conditions. Many times the situation occurs gradually and they learn to live with the abnormality. Men are well known not to seek medical attention as they should. It is usually a wife or a significant other the will push them to seek the needed attention. Other times some other problem will cause them to see a doctor.

wdlove, interesting that you mention about men being stubborn about seeking help...

a few years ago i had ingrown toe nails on both of my big toes. and they got pretty bad, but i just kept living with it, completely changed how i had to walk, i had to walk on the outside of my foot instead of the ball of my foot to keep the pressure off.... i think i lived with it for a good 4 or 5 months...

i didn't go to the doctor because i was worried about him cutting it out, so i went to a podiatrist instead, and she cleaned it up - got rid of the ingrown piece of nail, but it just came back again.

eventually i did go to the doctor, i got fed up with it i didn't care how much pain i had to go through, especially considering that i'd already gone through much pain with the ingrown nail iteself. well, i got the GP to cut it out, took a big slice of nail out, then stitched me up again.

well, no more problems now - all better. but i think i've learnt my lesson now. ;)

My wife and I both cannot remove our wedding rings. Last time I got mine off was when I had the stomach flu (about 6 months ago) and was dehydrated. Before that it has been 4 years since I could get it off. Our rings still move easily, they just cannot move over the knuckles anymore.... I guess there is no worry about either of us pretending that we aren't married. ;)

Thank you Stelliform, because of your post I just gave it a try and mine still comes off with a little twisting. I have had times when my knuckles swell. As long as they still move easily your in good shape. ;)

I was in for an MRI a year ago or so and my hand was very swollen (bad IV) My wife was afraid that they were going to have to cut it off.

I persistent enough to get it off.

Thats really nasty, I think I just barfed.

You will want to be sure that you stay out of the medical professions as a career. Just try to take some slow deep breaths, it should help to calm your stomach.

Good work MongoTheGeek, I'm sure that your wife was pleased. Did your use some ice to get the swelling down?

I had an ingrown toe nail once. I ended up cutting it and digging it out myself and treating it for infection and all that. It came out fine. Hurt a bit but it's just pain.

This isn't aol. Please, If you are so grossed out, why did you click on this thread?

To MacBandit, I hope this problem does not occur again. I think all of these problems boil down to the fact that people always do not make the wisest choices regarding the care and maitenance of themselves. There. My rant is over. :)

Weird that the ring is on the right hand.....

I thought that when your spouse dies you were suppose to move the ring to the right hand to signify that you were a widow/widower.

Does anyone know if this is true?

Yeah, I think it's one of the traditional things to do, but people just tend to do whatever feels right for them. Like keep it on their left hand, put it on a chain around their neck, etc.

Ugh. I can be stubborn about the doctor sometime. I threw my back out a couple years ago, and it took me about 2 months to go to the doctor (stupid, stupid). I ended up on two different meds, and in phys. therapy for a month. If I had gone right away, I probably would have been sent to therapy earlier, and gotten better earlier. As for my wedding ring, the last time I wore it, I forgot to take it off at bedtime, and woke up with a blue finger. Needless to say, I don't wear it any more.

Yeah, I also put off going to the doctor for years about a growth on my leg that had been getting gradually bigger ever since childhood... turned out to be a basal cell carcinoma (skin cancer). Needless to say, it's gone now (with stitches in its place), but it would have been a lot easier if I had gone in about 10 years ago.

Word of advice to anyone with light skin: if you see something irregular, DO NOT put off going to the dermatologist! If it's cancer and turns out to be a melanoma, then you could be in for a lot of trouble. Just my 2¢.

Yeah, that's good advice for everyone, including some that I should take, but then I'm stubborn about going to the doctor too. If I hadn't had so many bad experiences as a kid, I probably wouldn't be like that.

It sounds as though, you have now learned your lesson. Most medical problems are easier to treat if started as soon as noticed.

You should go to a jeweler and have your wedding ring resized. I'm sure that your wife would be pleased.

I forwared this link to a few girls at work today, it definitely made for some funny reactions. While they were on the phone you could hear a really strange noise, best described as a yelp, then a big apology to the customer.

oohhhhh.... yeah i tried that a couple of times, but it was deep. on my right big toe, i think they must have taken out about 4-5mm of nail. that's alot of nail from a small toe - thus the stitches. that really hurt after the anesthetic wore off, felt like i had my toe sliced wide open. well, it had been actually. :p

davecuse, nice work! :D you should have got a video of that. he he. :D
