I actually have a backpack that's checkpoint-friendly, so I just unzip the laptop compartment, lie the bag flat and leave the iPad inside. No issues at all with TSA.
Flown to London twice, Paris, Vienna, Toronto, and New York. 50% of the time I have to take it out, 50 % not. I usually just take t out anyway as I usually just have a small messenger bag as carry on and it's not a big deal.
Newark is the only airport in which I had to take it out 100% of the time. Most airports don't care if you leave it in the bag unless X-rays sees cords headphone wires stacked on your iPad. Of course TSa is TSa and they change up things all of the time.
To and from Vegas you can likely leave ONE iPad in your carryon. If you have two (one yours/other is wifey's) likely not going to work as they don't want anything above/below the iPad for scanning purposes.
I fly all over the world with mine. Outside of the USA its always a required removal. Of course, in some countries (Israel) they shoot Macbook Pro's also. They are really anti-Apple there.
