Hi, I just updated to OS X 10.11 and noticed a change in the FN key usage. I use it to control volume/brightness etc. Usually, I simply hold it down and control volume right? But since the update, while holding the FN key, the first time I press volume up is being considered as if I pressed F12 and brings my dashboard. I only get to start controlling volume on the second press of that key.

The same is true when I release the FN key: first press will still control volume and only the second time does my dashboard go away.

This is true for all F keys. Anyone else notice this and/or has a way to fix it?

    Thank you.

Are your keyboard settings showing your settings properly?
Keyboard pref pane, where the setting "Use all F1, F2, etc..." should be unchecked?
Make sure that the setting is the SAME for both the internal and the external keyboards.
Press the shift key on your external (so that keyboard is recognized), and check the settings.
Then, press the internal keyboard shift key, and check the settings again.
You can also turn that F1,F2 setting ON, then logout/log in again, and turn setting back off.
Again, if you want both keyboards to respond the same way, then you need to activate each keyboard, and check the setting for each.

its checked for both (as intended).
this is really not about one is behaving different then the other, it's about external keyboard being broken while internal is not.
It is not the keyboard itself i tried several Apple Keyboard (USB, full size) and all behave the same.
i press "fn", then i press F11 for reducing the volume and the pressed FN key is not respected. i keep pressing FN and F11 again and volume is reduced as expected. when i stop pressing fn, the next keypress is treated as if FN is still pressed (e.g. i press F11 again the volume is reduced one more time, next keypress after that is then treated normal).

I have the exact same problem. If I check the "use all F1, F2 keys as standard function keys" box in system preferences, I get access to the standard function keys, but hold Fn does not give me the Apple function keys back. It's as if my Fn key is broken. Frustrating...
