A foldable iMac would still be too unwieldy to be easily portable. A rollable screen could work, although there have only been TV prototypes (see edit, there has been one released) so far (I don't know of any foldable prototypes of this size at all).

EDIT: Turns out there has been a rollable TV released in the past, the LG Series R1. https://www.lg.com/uk/tvs/smart-tv/...4n59B2ej51UhDdAosm2wySbg5Xt1nnTDOJvsiqvm6ZJP8

Now that Liquid Glass is complete, something needs to be in the next chapter.

Probably have Steve Ballmer running laps around the spaceship yelling "Foldables! Foldables! Foldables!". Maybe we'll get a foldable watch.

Fold it? for what - transport? It's a desktop, not a laptop or tablet.

Yes. Imagine folding it in half, packing it in your backpack with a mouse and keyboard and powercord, unpacking it onto the stand that folds flat.

A MacBook Pro does not have a 24" pro-quality display. A MacBook Air doesn't come in yellow, green, pink, blue, or purple.

An iMac is a statement. Imagine the statement you'd make by UNFOLDING and getting work done at Starbucks. And with that massive display, you'd be so much more efficient with less strain on the eye.

It immediately says to me, that's either a student or someone who can't afford to have their own private workspace.

Who's doing any kind of serious work at a Starbucks?

Who's voluntarily taking a Zoom call with a live background full of strangers?

The 20th Anniversary Mac was very portable. The bottom Metal Bar Swivels upward so the curve is just behind the Mac. You pick it up and the front/top of the Mac leans into your body for support while the handle bears the weight. You then carry it room to room easily. All the plugs come off easily so nothing is stuck on the back.... so it's kinda foldable since the base/feet folds up to carry it. 😀

You would indeed be making a "statement" - but not a positive one.

If using the latest technology to enhance a product's capability and value is a statement, then I fail to see how that's a negative.

Foldable Imac? That would be a great idea. I like the idea of a portable desktop.

Agreed. What use cases would you use it for?

What desktop is this friend?

I think some of the foldable iMac naysayers are shooting the messenger (myself) in spite of a great idea.

If a portable iMac makes no sense, why did Jobs use the handle in the iMac G3 design in his marketing pitch when it was released? Why did other desktops, like the 20th Anniversary as you mention, fold? Why are there iMac cases (link)?

Yes, maybe desktops designed for these sort of convenience could better be described as "transportable" rather than portable, as they are only convenient for occasional transportation, but it still makes sense for the occasional Starbucks trip where my computer is my business card.

A foldable desktop seems pretty unlikely. Apple aims for high volume sales, and with desktops a small percentage of its sales for the last decade it's unlikely they'd come out with such a niche machine.
