I'm less worried that Apple let Samsung prototype foldable phones before releasing their own than the fact that Apple has let Asian manufacturers prototype nearly all of the latest hardware features before adding them to their phones.

On the other hand, every time Apple develops a new feature, Apple's competitors copy them the very next year. All is fair in love, war, and smartphones.

I just did an extended hands-on with the Fold 7 and it's pretty amazing. Even the crease isn't really all that bad. If it weren't such a pain to switch I'd have ordered the Fold 7 on the spot.

Which is exactly why apple get away pushing out incremental changes year after year; because they have the market by the balls and people can't move away even if they wanted to.

I'm skeptical, especially about closing it with crap on the screen. I don't get the use case, but some may want it, but damn, I wouldn't be a $2000 early adopter on this one.
Indeed … before closing it, you would want to make sure it’s grease-free!

The different divisions of Samsung might as well be different companies, to Samsung's screen division Apple is a customer not a competitor. It'd be like assuming Samsung's home appliance division sits up at night thinking about Apple. when Samsung reports their earnings the display business is one of the largest.

And when Samsung reports earnings, displays is one of, if not the, biggest parts of the business.

Apple should contact my daughter. She is several years into an exhaustive iPhone screen folding experiment, and has successfully folded many models…though typically only once each.

Agreed and acknowledged. But as the iPhone 10 had better displays sourced from Samsung Display than the equivalent generation of Galaxy was using, so as it applies to folding devices, Samsung and others have been content with releasing them with a visible "crease" for years, whereas Apple was content to wait until manufacturing technology had advanced to the point the "crease" was no longer present/visible.
Manufacturing technology that would likely not be available at production volune if it weren't for Samsung going foldable 7 years ago.

Someone said "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should"

Which is exactly what applies to folding phones.

The technology came first - an OLED panel is a piece flexible plastic - so since day one of OLEDS someone's been going "how can we make money selling this??"

They've tried rollable screens, rollable TV's, foldable tablets and foldable phones - none of them have caught on in any significant way. It's a terrible idea and the iPhone Air will be a more popular device.
iPhone Air is much cheaper.

Instead of wasting resources on unreliable and uneven folding screens, why not just do two screens side-by side?

It's certainly possible to make them near-seamless, with no gap visible. Scratch-resistant, waterproof, shatter-resistant, etc. - all for half the price.

P.S. I've had Samsung Flip of the first generation - after couple of months it stated delaminating around the crease. These designs are inherently unreliable, because physics.

P.P.S. Marketing can lie all they want about these screens longevity, but you can just do a quick search for user reports - A LOT of these screens fails within a year.

IOS 27 will introduce iPhone fold. will sell for $2000
IOS 28 will introduce new calendar app for iPhone fold
IOS 29 will introduce new notes app for iPhone fold
IOS 30 will introduce new weather app for iPhone fold.
IOS 31 will introduce FaceID for iPhone fold and sell for $2500

This is how Tim Cook milks customers with new products.

My next phone will be a foldable (unless the 17 Pro/Air somehow manage a huge leap over my 16 Pro), I really want one with how good they are nowadays. I'll wait another 1-2 years for Apple to do it, but if they don't get it together I'll go for an Android device.

“I don’t need it, so nobody else needs it either.”

Why are so many people seemingly incapable of understanding the fact that different people have different needs, preferences, and perspectives?

Different ≠ Wrong
Exactly this. So many apple products have launched and people have said "who needs it", I think even the OG iPhone got some pretty bad heat from people.

I'm tempted to move back to a dumb phone and iPad but if that doesn't work out for me, I'll combine everything into a foldable.

I want a SMALLER phone. Take the mini and fold it in half and I'm interested. I don't want to (and won't) carry a giagantic device!!!!

So Samsung had 7 chances to get it right, and they’re only getting it right for the 8th one because Apple is going to get it right?

Even when it comes to “effort” they copy Apple 🤣
Samsung manufactures these displays for the new foldable iPhone. Apple is just a mere customer waiting 8 years for the technology to be improved enough.

This is an absolutely ridiculous take.
Samsung did all the heavy lifting, iterated again and again, improving each time.

There wouldn’t even be (talk of) a foldable iPhone if not for Samsung.

Not too mention that the IPhone will use a Samsung display.
