I would think the only thing Apple is waiting for is a screen that has durability and doesn’t show the crease where it folds
So far no Luck
Apple has the test of the technology for a folding iPhone

I'll bet 99% of the naysayers have either never touched a foldable or maybe touched one 2-3 generations ago but haven't used a newer generation one as a daily driver. It's the only way I can make sense of such outdated comments like having a huge crease, durability issues, twice the thickness of an iphone, etc. These things just are not true anymore, the crease is virtually gone as can be seen in the OnePlus, the hinges are rated for hundreds of thousands of folds, a million folds in the OnePlus, and obviously there isn't any sort of mass failure of these in the media, and the last couple of generations have only been a few mm thicker when closed than an iPhone pro max.

In practice the inner screens don't feel quite as good as a regular slab phone, but I still get so baffled when comparing my ip pro max to my foldable, the screens feel identical to me other than the ip having a slightly harder and colder feeling screen. Durablity, my iPhone is full of microscratches from being in my pocket, my foldable is pristine because the screen is so well protected when folded.
Yeah, it's not just the lack of experience with such devices but also the lack on fairness in general, you can not like something but still try to be balanced or constructive about it. A lot of users here don't want Apple to built a fordable devices simply because it's an Android thing and Apple just follows suit(although they've been doing that anyway with most of the new things they introduced in the last years).

Also up to this point Samsung sold millions of foldables each year. If there would have been wide spread reliability problems with the display Samsung would have guaranteed been obligated to make another huge recall up to this point, like they did with the Note 7, which they only sold 2.5 millions units and had like 96 complains in the US.
I'm also close to tech news and information in general, X would explode in an instant if there would be wide spread problems with the foldable displays. Even the pics from the few people that had problems with their OnePlus Open were shared countless times.

Still don’t understand how this fits into the line up. Seems very niche.

Between iPhones and Apple Watch just don’t see what this offers.
A smaller folding iPhone, like the DIY one shown in the article photo, doesnt appeal to me, but a larger one which folds lengthwise offers a small tablet without needing to carry an iPad mini. That’s the one I would purchase.

I agree. Though I also don't carry a purse. People whose clothes don't always get deep pockets (unfortunate fashion trend) may like one to fit in a bag.

to quote LRG: " this is farts!" Gimmick I don't want or need. Call me when the tech is there. I met a few people with foldables, and no one was happy with them.

a new report has said this isn't accurate but it seems chinese brands are going against foldable now due to cost and the cost to repair.

My iPhone XS would like a word with you :) And I'm sure someone with an even older phone will show up in a minute.

So careful with the expected lifetime. It's not 1 year.
Considering you are using the XS, I assume you are not very up-to-date with the latest news from the mobile world, or at least from outside Apple's garden, so here is some context regarding durability of foldables:

400k means you can open&close it 100 times a day and it will last 10 years... Plus I am assuming you will not be purposefully opening it underwater, or bathing it in flour and eggs. Your mileage may vary, but people should really rethink their opinions on all non-Apple products ;)

Stop filling your pockets with sand 😉

Same for me. I see a real benefit in not having to carry a phone and a tablet around. But aparently this is blasphemy and wrongthink.

The same people who poo on foldable phones would like up to buy them if apple made one.

After having used one for 2 years it is a total game changer to have a portable tablet with you everywhere you go.

The folds that have come out thus far are still not the final form. In China they already have folding phones that when closed aren't much thicker than a iPhone 15 PM, and don't weigh as much as one either.

The technology is only going to get better, slimmer, and more durable. For the added utility they provide, they are already worth the trade offs IMHO, but that will only increase as the technology improves

Not everyone. I can accomplish 99% of what I could on a little tablet on a current iPhone. Would be kinda neat to fold the screen out for more real estate, but then I can't use it one handed any more- I have big hands so the 15 Pro Max is still a one handed device for me. It would less convenient, essentially.

I'm not poo pooing the concept, just to be clear- I know loads of people that would love one. Doesn't mean they'd be better for everyone.

One benefit of a larger-style folding iPhone would be not having the keyboard occupy 2/3 of the screen when in landscape.

I really hate the thought of going back in time to folding phones. As long as there is a non-foldable option, I will happily buy that. I have no idea why I'd need a phone to fold in all honesty.

Didn't think of that. With phones so tall and slim I never- genuinely never- would type on my phone in landscape. I just turned my phone around to look at it that way- it's basically unusable!

The fact we are still a long way from fixing the display crease issue explains why I think Apple will never build a foldable iPhone, let alone a foldable iPad. Now, an iPad mini merging with full iPhone functionality (an idea proposed by many in the technology press over a decade ago) might actually happen within the next 3-4 years.

wont be an iPad, it'll be the iPhone 19 Pro Max Ultra Plus

Phones like the one plus open have barely noticeable creases, and no cap when folded. They have made huge strides on this front in the past 2 years.
