Yeah, it's not just the lack of experience with such devices but also the lack on fairness in general, you can not like something but still try to be balanced or constructive about it. A lot of users here don't want Apple to built a fordable devices simply because it's an Android thing and Apple just follows suit(although they've been doing that anyway with most of the new things they introduced in the last years).I'll bet 99% of the naysayers have either never touched a foldable or maybe touched one 2-3 generations ago but haven't used a newer generation one as a daily driver. It's the only way I can make sense of such outdated comments like having a huge crease, durability issues, twice the thickness of an iphone, etc. These things just are not true anymore, the crease is virtually gone as can be seen in the OnePlus, the hinges are rated for hundreds of thousands of folds, a million folds in the OnePlus, and obviously there isn't any sort of mass failure of these in the media, and the last couple of generations have only been a few mm thicker when closed than an iPhone pro max.
In practice the inner screens don't feel quite as good as a regular slab phone, but I still get so baffled when comparing my ip pro max to my foldable, the screens feel identical to me other than the ip having a slightly harder and colder feeling screen. Durablity, my iPhone is full of microscratches from being in my pocket, my foldable is pristine because the screen is so well protected when folded.
A smaller folding iPhone, like the DIY one shown in the article photo, doesnt appeal to me, but a larger one which folds lengthwise offers a small tablet without needing to carry an iPad mini. That’s the one I would purchase.Still don’t understand how this fits into the line up. Seems very niche.
Between iPhones and Apple Watch just don’t see what this offers.
Just you wait.
They made a big iPhone aka iPad didn’t they? Do you own that? For what? People to start liking the pointless folding phone?
I agree. Though I also don't carry a purse. People whose clothes don't always get deep pockets (unfortunate fashion trend) may like one to fit in a bag.A smaller folding iPhone, like the DIY one shown in the article photo, doesnt appeal to me, but a larger one which folds lengthwise offers a small tablet without needing to carry an iPad mini. Considering you are using the XS, I assume you are not very up-to-date with the latest news from the mobile world, or at least from outside Apple's garden, so here is some context regarding durability of foldables:My iPhone XS would like a word with youAnd I'm sure someone with an even older phone will show up in a minute.
So careful with the expected lifetime. It's not 1 year.
Stop filling your pockets with sand 😉I'll bet 99% of the naysayers have either never touched a foldable or maybe touched one 2-3 generations ago but haven't used a newer generation one as a daily driver. Same for me. I see a real benefit in not having to carry a phone and a tablet around. But aparently this is blasphemy and wrongthink.A smaller folding iPhone, like the DIY one shown in the article photo, doesnt appeal to me, but a larger one which folds lengthwise offers a small tablet without needing to carry an iPad mini. The same people who poo on foldable phones would like up to buy them if apple made one.Same for me. I see a real benefit in not having to carry a phone and a tablet around. But aparently this is blasphemy and wrongthink.
Not everyone. I can accomplish 99% of what I could on a little tablet on a current iPhone. Would be kinda neat to fold the screen out for more real estate, but then I can't use it one handed any more- I have big hands so the 15 Pro Max is still a one handed device for me. It would less convenient, essentially. The same people who poo on foldable phones would like up to buy them if apple made one.
One benefit of a larger-style folding iPhone would be not having the keyboard occupy 2/3 of the screen when in landscape. Not everyone. I'm not poo pooing the concept, just to be clear- I know loads of people that would love one. Doesn't mean they'd be better for everyone.
Didn't think of that. With phones so tall and slim I never- genuinely never- would type on my phone in landscape. I just turned my phone around to look at it that way- it's basically unusable! One benefit of a larger-style folding iPhone would be not having the keyboard occupy 2/3 of the screen when in landscape.
And using/typing on your phone in landscape is a two handed affair anyway.Didn't think of that. With phones so tall and slim I never- genuinely never- would type on my phone in landscape. I just turned my phone around to look at it that way- it's basically unusable!
wont be an iPad, it'll be the iPhone 19 Pro Max Ultra PlusThe fact we are still a long way from fixing the display crease issue explains why I think Apple will never build a foldable iPhone, let alone a foldable iPad. Now, an iPad mini merging with full iPhone functionality (an idea proposed by many in the technology press over a decade ago) might actually happen within the next 3-4 years.
Phones like the one plus open have barely noticeable creases, and no cap when folded. They have made huge strides on this front in the past 2 years. The fact we are still a long way from fixing the display crease issue explains why I think Apple will never build a foldable iPhone, let alone a foldable iPad.
