If Apple could stay below two grand asking price, that would make it somehow appealing for tech enthusiasts. Realistically it could end up being above. I think the first folding Galaxys started way above 2k when introduced? I am somewhat excited about the foldable iPhone and I have a feeling Apple will make it right and won‘t disappoint us.

I am still said they are not coping the FLIP style instead going with the big one. But maybe with their experience with iPadOs (just a fancy iOs) they want to leverage that. The only upside that can come from it, is feature parity from iOs to iPadOs instead of iPadOs getting some features a year later.

ah yes the old Steve jobs quote that you should skate furiously chasing behind the puck.

Pretty sure that’s how it went.
Remember when Apple released the MacBook Air into the already established small/ultralight laptop category. It was better than the competition, but the competition did exist. Yes I know that the Duos, 2400C, and 12" AlBook proceeded it.

It's an iPad by another name.

There is a niche for these things.

I'm not in that market segment, but someone is.

I've been waiting for a foldable iPhone for a couple of years now. I'm currently not satisfied with the software quality of iOS 18 (and to an extent watchOS 11) so if that doesn't improve I might look at other brands anyway, but if it improves this is the phone I'd get.

For me it'd likely completely replace my iPad, so I'm fine with it costing roughly what an iPhone Pro + iPad Pro cost. Some people here argue that one could just buy an iPhone and an iPad, but having a pocketable device that acts as both (to an extent) means I only have to worry about one less device for charging, carrying with me, updating, having two SIM cards, syncing etc.

I just hope they use somewhat state of the art hardware from the get go, I wouldn't put it past Apple to limit the outside display to 60 Hz for example just so they can make it 120 Hz for the second generation.

This will likely be my next iPhone if it is released next year. I have the 15PM and skipped the 16PM and will skip the 17PM based off if the leaks are true. So, 18PM and Foldable iPhone in 2026 sounds like a good time to upgrade for me.

Best of luck with that pricing.

I'm also curious what Apple will charge for AppleCare+ on a foldable iPhone ?
Well, the good thing is, Apple will provide options at different price points.

iPhone 18
iPhone 18 Air
iPhone Pro
iPhone Pro Max
iPhone Foldable

So, it’s not a situation where only one phone will be available.

Hard pass at that price. I really like Apple products and ecosystem. But if they intend on skyrocketing prices across all iPhone models in this way, I'll abandon the ecosystem and make do with Android and phones by Pixel, Redmagic, Oppo.
Why would it be skyrocketing prices?

Every other foldable "innovation" experiment that these Android phone makers are responsible for, have charged $2,000 or more for theirs. Why respond so negatively since that appears to be the market price for this project?

Although I love the idea of folding phones, I’m a bit hesitant.

Physics is physics and when a material bends, there will be a crease, and that would drive me mad.

I also don’t want a delicate screen that can be easily permanently scratched even with a finger nail, especially with a toddler at home.

The Samsung Fold is about US$1600 here in Canada, direct from Samsung. Mind you I think the MRSP in the US is $1900.

The Flip is way cheaper though.

A solution in search of a problem.

In terms of actual practical benefit it has none while adding an unnecessary layer of complexity. So it will be an expensive toy for those who want the latest gimmick to play with. It also creates buzz for people to have something to talk about. Thats it.

Current smartphones are mature technology where the most beneficial advancement is in increasing battery life. The rest of it has been largely figured out. Phone cameras have gotten so good that they’re just finessing what is already there. So every redesign they’re now fiddling with size and shape to some extent and OS updates are down to adding features most people really couldn’t care less about and few will actually use.

Yes, the market is driven by novelty. But like other things the smartphone is at a point where you are really hard-pressed to envision something genuinely better to replace it. The foldable phone aint it. Because really it’s not a step forward, but actually backward. We’ve already had phones that folded in some way or other only they were mechanical in nature rather than having a display that actually folds. The iPhone and others did away with all that to give us a multipurpose device with an elegantly simple design that just works.

Consider the ongoing debate for the optimum phone size. One size cannot fit all because of different needs and expectations. But within that the optimum form factor has already been found—the existing smartphone.

So where is the real advantage and benefit with a foldable phone other than trying to develop a flawless foldable screen for some purpose yet to be envisioned? I think the real value here is in the research and development that might deliver something, some tech or engineering, of genuine value. But a foldabe phone isn’t it.
