Unlike most everyone here, apparently, I'm super interested in this.

I find it so weird how many people on here have criticised this sort of device since it was first mentioned, yet fawn over the Vision Pro which apparently was to be an "iPhone moment".

I remember the days of having my phone and Nexus 7 in my pockets. They were perfect on the train and this could be a great single alternative. Meanwhile for me and the overpriced headset = crickets.

If Samsung can't even craft a crease-free display for THEIR OWN high-end foldables, how (or why) the hell are they going to for their BIGGEST COMPETITOR?! Doesn't make any sense.

Especially considering a crease-free foldable does NOT exist, from any manufacturer.
Maybe, just maybe they're milking customers?

Sorry, I don't believe a piece of plastic you fold over, and over won't crease. The single screen iPhone architecture is the definitive smart phone. I will not be falling for the iGimmick.

Thickness between 9mm and 9.5mm and a 5.5 outer display? That's a 4S-size folding iPhone, I'm so in.

I imagine it’s because the supplier has a watertight NDA so Samsung can’t steal the idea until Fine M-Tec delivers the part to Samsung’s production lines.

Also I imagine Samsung’s limit for total cost of materials is lower than Apple’s since their profit margins tend to be smaller. They might be aware of the new product from Fine M-Tec but chose not to include it in total cost of materials for this generation of foldphones.

Apple has a history of taking a product that already exists and making a significant leap in engineering and quality, thus bringing the product to mainstream success.

Eg. there were other MP3 players before the iPod, but Apple made them ubiquitous.
Samsung didn’t have the inclination to make these improvements, their solution was “good enough”, but when you’ve got a contract company that’s going to be paying for potentially 40-50 million to be made in a year, the impetus to improve becomes much greater. :) This will eventually filter down to non-Apple devices after they figure out how to make it reliably at scale.

They get paid to make stuff.

They do contract manufacturing. If they stole the IP from their customers it may hurt their business. Also, Samsung has made a very nice lineup of folding devices on their own which has been very innovative. It is quite normal that other companies would run with that inspiration and try to make something similar or maybe better. Samsung sells far more screens per year than they do phones.

crease-free inner display and ai-free inner design only by Apple 😂

nothing better then talking to a siri on a 2+k$ device and getting random stupid answers 😂
Speaking of which, recently I asked Siri "Directions Home", like I have many times. This time however I was further away from home. I did not check where it was taking me because I was so used to it never letting me down. Anyways, drove almost an hour and I realized it's taking me somewhere else and not any closer to my actual home.

Turned out it was taking me to a similar address as mine, but not actually mine. It was a similar street name, but different city. I double checked the "home" address by asking "what is my home address" and it had the full correct address including city and zip code. I even tried to replicate the issue and it never suggested the wrong address again despite being near it now. No idea what the hell happened there but just reminds me of "random stupid answers" from Siri.

I would expect that the thickness of each half will roughly match the iPhone Air (5.5mm). Making both halves very thin is the only way to avoid having a device like this being too thick when closed.

First Galaxy Fold was released in in 2019 (6 years ago! ) and fold-able phone market is still negligible compared to normal phones. So smells to me like another very good device technically but that won't sell well.

I am interested in this device, but the aspect ratio when unfolded is a huge sticking point for me. If the 7.8 inch internal screen was 16:9 or 16:10 I would preorder it site unseen. But we know its gonna be a square ratio which means for media consumption it will be limited to just a little bigger than the outer screen. And that is not exciting for me.
My dream folding iphone max sized device that has two hinges, incorporating the front screen into an expanded “triple screen” iPad replacement, like the Mate XT.

Don’t worry, when the date slips to shipping in November, next September, you will see all the same usernames here complaining about not making enough to satisfy demand.

I had thought if they don't release another mini, then this would be a good upgrade, but Samsung's fold costs like $2000, so Apple will make this $2200 and in some countries it will be for $2500! too expensive! I would rather wait for the "Fold 2" cause I know Fold 1 will be meh.

I don't know why anyone wants this. Why would you want an extra step to using your phone? And a mechanical linkage that *will* wear out and cause problems.

They seem to be trying so hard to make something relatively pointless.
You know, I have to agree

Flip phones seemed all the more practical back then when we didn't have much in the way of touchscreen phones, but ever since all of what we have in terms of touchscreen technology has sprang into existence, I feel like having a flip or fold mechanism that will only inevitably wear out over time seems a bit silly if you ask me

Dealing with a foldable iPhone in my shirt pocket would quickly become annoying. Both in terms of thickness/weight and unfolding/folding whenever I want to quickly use it when out and about (for making photographs, answering/making calls, getting information via Safari, etc.) and putting it back into my shirt pocket.

Yuck.

Why would it take any more effort to use than your current iPhone? You don’t have to unfold it unless you prefer to use the inner display, otherwise you use the outer display exactly as you would any other smartphone.

My Pixel 9 Pro Fold is 30 grams heavier than my iPhone 15 Pro Max. It’s a hell of a lot smaller than putting both my iPhone and an iPad mini in my pocket your gives me the functionality of both.

Unlike most everyone here, apparently, I'm super interested in this.

Same. I still prefer the Apple ecosystem for most things which is what keeps me from using my Pixel 9 Pro Fold more than I already do. Can’t wait for Apple’s version.

The only thing keeping me from buying this is the fact that it won’t have the full camera system. That’s a must-have for me.

I think the Vision Pro is really cool but it’s just stuck in a loop. It’s too expensive for the masses, which leads to it not getting well-developed for, which leads to it not being anywhere near worth its price, and the cycle continues. The tech and implementation is really quite impressive though.

A phone like this likely wouldn’t have the same issue.

I'm excited for the form factor. I may never unfold it though.

Hello iPhone 18 Mini, or whatever. At 2x the original's price. And with a useless hinge.
