Let’s be honest this would be the first truly new thing Apple has done in the iPhone space since the original launch. You can complain about the price all you want, but if you’re even remotely into tech, you can’t seriously sit here and say this doesn’t intrigue you at all. Not saying everyone needs it, that’s totally fair. But this is a genuinely interesting piece of tech. And the people instantly writing it off? Yeah… that feels a lot more like future FOMO than anything else.
That’s the usually narrative on MR regarding a new product rumour from Apple, then it gets announced and released and those comments disappear into the internet black hole 😉

The price is way too high
How is the price too high? For comparison, an iPhone 17 Pro w/ 256GB of storage + an iPad Mini 256GB with Wi-Fi and Cellular is $1848. If the iPhone Fold ends up being $1999, for the two devices in one, that can easily fit in your pocket, I think the price is just right. If it ends up starting higher than $1999, then we've got a problem.

Factor in higher component cost due to AI.

It seems really complicated, and like the Z fold, not a (seemless) product like most of Apple's stuff I've had at least.

A lot of moving parts, and the 'movement' of these parts are moving, ..you get it.

The foldable iPhone is expected to launch later in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, although recently one analyst claimed the device could be released closer to December.
So there's ample time for non-fold members to hone our counseling skills. Remember folks, just because it didn't happen to you doesn't mean it couldn't, so be supportive.

I find myself very uninterested in a folding phone. Happy to let others test this until it becomes very mainstream (and cheaper).

Yet no one is looking for three individual similar sized screens on a single folding device. Maybe this device is not suitable for some people’s usage but hey the world will continue to turn.
The assumption is people want a phone that turns into one big display which seems to sell. All I'm saying is that the weakness of a plastic folding screen is easily sidestepped by making something like the Surface Duo but better. Jobs original reasoning for getting rid of the buttons for a larger screen on the OG iPhone was sound. But what if you could go back to the design of those old flip phones and just have dual touchscreens instead?

Having a web page scale across two displays in a tower orientation isn't so bad and having all buttons/interactions on the bottom with the action on the top means your thumbs never obscure the action. But without the fragile hinge it would be easy to IP68 the thing and keep it relatively thin. 2 glass displays is a heck of a lot hardier.

I honestly don't know if I want something like this until I get one and use it for a bit.

What I'd really like, to go along with things like a foldable, is Apple Watches that are more standalone.

Nothing is helping with my need for small/light/tiny/discrete iPhone usage on the go.

as soon as a heard “virtually crease free” I knew it would still be the same as other fold phones.
The Oppo Find N6 is the current crease to beat. They're calling it the "zero-feel crease", claiming that you can't feel it with your finger. Seen a few reviewers agree with this claim. You can still see it at certain angles though, it does look leagues ahead of other foldables like the Galaxy Fold. Too bad it's launching in very few markets.

I haven't cared about any crease in a couple years. None of them look bad. Too much focus on crease when we should be focused on the strength of the screen against scratches and cracks, as well as the durability of the hinge itself.

The general trend is moving towards ultra slim bezel-less displays if not continuous displays such as curved and ultra-wide displays and you are proposing two separate touchscreen displays to what Nintendo had with the Game&Watch (sans touchscreen) decades earlier for a multi-touch pocket computer. Don’t get me wrong it may work but it’s a big risk for even a company such as Apple to explore.

It’s not a step backwards when it can do more than any other current iPhone
FaceID, also likely less powerful and with lesser camera modules. So if you think a big flappy less durable plastic screen is a selling point I guess its for you 🤷‍♂️

Losing Face ID over Touch ID is more of a side grade. It’s not a upgrade or downgrade

It’s called ultra thin glass not direct plastic as you call it

Foldables these days durability isn’t an issue at all.

iPhone fold will be better in all the following

Bigger display
Better for browsing
Better for app usage
Better for multitasking
Better for productivity
Bigger battery

So it all comes down to overall more camera hardware. If that’s a deal breaker you get the pro but all the areas I mentioned will be far superior on the iPhone fold
