Im writing my thesis and instead of having parts saved in the 'my documents' stack i want to create a folder, put my own pic on the front(i hate the blue folder picture) and then put it into the dock

Can I put my own pic as the folder icon?

I've tried to put a folder into the dock but when i do, it keeps a copy of the folder on the desktop as well. When i delete the one on the desktop, the one in the folder disappears as well!

Basically, can I create a customized folder for just the dock only?

No, things in the Dock are just shortcuts to actual folders. Everything in the dock has to be somewhere in the folder structure of your hard-drive somewhere.

Yes, you can change the icon of any folder.

Well, if it contains documents, I would suggest saving it in "Documents"

Anyways, to change the icon of a folder, Right-click on the folder and choose Get Info, then copy and paste an image over the image of the folder at the top left of the info window.

I changed the icon, but when i drag it from the documents folder to the dock it, (a) doesn't go into the main dock and, (b) when I put it into the stacks side of the dock it doesn't display the folder icon, it just says its a doc!

Sorry for the stupid questions....I'm new to macs

Hey, THANK YOU for this neat tip!!!!! I just tried it on a couple of my folders and it works a treat! Now my desktop looks MUCH nicer and much more personalized than using those plain blue folders! MANY thanks!

The main part of the doc is for .app Applications only (and .exe used in Parallels, VPC, or Fusion). Unless the icon is part of the properties (deeper than Get Info), it will default to the default icon for the file type.

I think you can only add Applications to the Left Side ("Main") Dock area. The right side is for stacks. The nature of the stack is to show you what's in it. Since you have a doc file in the stack it shows the file and the type of file it is. I'm not sure how you can create a stack with a custom image. A real round about way would be to make a folder (F1) in a folder (F2). Give F2 the custom icon and put it in F1 and put F1 in the stack. Round about way but it might work. Only problem is you'll have to navigate from F1 to F2 each time you want to go in it. Try right clicking on the stack and see if you can customize that one.

Actually, since 10.5.2 you don't have to go to that trouble.

Just right click on the Stack and select Display as Folder

Change in behavior of folder icon (jpg)

A few days ago I followed the tip here about changing the icon of the folder so that I could use a jpg instead..... worked a treat. It was this procedure: "to change the icon of a folder, Right-click on the folder and choose Get Info, then copy and paste an image over the image of the folder at the top left of the info window."

So today I decided to do a couple more and also to change the one that I had on one of my desktop folders. Did the exact same procedure and yet now I'm getting just the .jpg icon instead of my actual image over the folder. ?? I open my .jpgs with Preview. What's changed and why?

I have the same problem except it's with the built in system .icns icon files. I copy the icon over from "Get Info" and it shows up as the generic .icns filetype icon instead of the actual icon. I haven't found a solution yet so if someone knows how to fix it, it would be great.
