Is there a way to password protect a folder? I would like to keep all my work files in a folder that i can lock so my friends can't access them and mess something up.

Create an encrypted and password-protected disk image and store your sensitive files there. Only open the dmg when you want to use it, and dismount it when you're done.

Use chmod (in terminal) to set files (or the folder) to read only & or have a guest account for others to use

in the past i have created an encrypted sparse disk image using disk utility. then, you just have to unmount it to lock it again and can transfer it as a singular file

Out of curiosity and nosiness, what might you want to lock a folder for?

My house seems to be the place to hang out on the weekend and alot of people use my computer and i keep a lot of school work and a few websites i have designed on my computer and my freinds like to mess around with me and hide things, change the files names and once they went into a paper i wrote for school and added curse words in the paper and i didnt realize when i printed it and i handed it in. Good thing my teacher found it funny :D

Good thinking. As a college student, I know exactly how that goes. Always with the infamous "Meatspin" or "*******" and such. It's too bad for them that I am a computer nerd, and can get them back in ways they can't fix. :)

    EDIT:

Good thing you didn't just make a guest user. :) There are ways around that.
