If you're following a forum member are you supposed to receive alerts when they post content?

That would be great because I don't really get the purpose of following a member in its current configuration

This sums it up. It appears that the "What's New" section is missing (or deliberately hidden) here at MR (unless I just didn't spot it in the menus) but it does exist here https://forums.macrumors.com/whats-new/news-feed and note the "your news feed" tab on the top, this is where posts from those you follow will appear. This is the only feature for following that I am aware of.
