Does anyone know the font for the OS9 splash?

Apple has (or had as I'm not sure they still use it much anymore) their own version of Garamond called Apple Garamond. If you have an old version of Classic (OS 9 or before) you can find it there. It is possible that early releases of OS X had it as well.

...slightly surprised to find it available for free, but I assume it's legit.

Not legit. The real Apple Garamond was a custom condensed version of ITC Garamond with stroke adjustments and new hinting by Bitstream. It has never been released publicly by Apple. A quick glance at the version on DaFont shows that it is simply a version of ITC Garamond mechanically condensed to 80%. This "squashing" has distorted the strokes and made a mess of the spacing.

The kerning is different (I used optical but it's still off) and the font needs to be 13% taller, but the fake Apple Garamond still looks bad because the official font has thinner strokes and the letters have different proportions. I manually moved the letters and thinned them out a bit. Its still a bit off, but close enough.
