For fun, iOS names

Watching how Apple is "merging" iOS and OSX, I wondered if they would eventually start giving iOS its own "theme" the way OSX has big cats.

It would make sense, Apple wouldn't want to ship "iOS 22," it would get dull and uninteresting.

So perhaps they stop at 5 or 10, and then start calling it "iOS 5, Sighthound"

Or something. Dogs, birds, maybe it's not even an animal. Maybe they would choose types of trees or elements on the periodic table.

Or this is half-baked, I don't really know. But it's fun to think about. Any postulations?

    I don't think they will.

Android does this, and the names are kinda confusing after a while.

But Android doesn't follow any specific genre, they just pick random BS names that start with the letter that's next in the alphabet. No reason, just randomness.

And it doesn't help that they are constantly releasing new versions to the point where even the public can't keep up. At least with iOS, it stays around for a year and then moves to the next number.

"Ice Cream Sandwich" is probably the worst name ever for an operating system.

Naming iOS after something could be interesting, since they aren't releasing a new version every few months, it'll be easier to differentiate them.

I would be thrilled with alcohol-related names: iOS Mojito, iOS Vodka, iOS Martini ;)

But since the above ain't happening, I do like the idea of star constellations.

    I'd buy it.

They name all their OS's after dessert/sugary treat items as has already been stated.

I agree but it might get confusing as Mac OS X usually ships with a different galaxy image.

    Desert Kitten? :p
I actually made this on Photoshop Touch, not bad for a first try.

Cut out the original Mountain Lion, added Blur, new layer of Kitten from Google, removed old text, added new.

    Tah-Dah.

    Small cats. I like it.

    :D

Constellations would be awesome. But I think they would do something with a more finite number of names. How many more big cats can they do?

perhaps once they reach iOS 10 they'll switch over to iOS X and then start some sort of naming theme. or whenever iOS and OS X start to become more of a singular entity.

This gets confusing because "tasty treat" is really open-ended. I think having a smaller, specific amount of new names is essential. There are only a certain number of big cats, and I'm sure Apple doesn't plan on calling every future incarnation of their desktop OS number "ten." At some point they'll go to eleven and use a different theme. Or at that point OSX and iOS will be so intermingled they'll just call it one thing.

But yeah, a donut can be both a tasty treat and a breakfast meal. Going from donut to honeycomb to ice cream sandwich covers way too much area. They also happen so often that the average user doesn't bother to learn anything about it. If iOS were to use this method they would likely stick to something simpler.

Not everyone likes all desserts. If you name it OS Donut and someone doesn't like donuts they may assume they won't like the OS. I haven't met anyone that said they aren't a big fan of Lions, Panthers, Mountain Lions, or Tigers though.

I don't think Apple wants people to focus on iOS releases the way they do OS X upgrades. For one thing, iOS upgrades are free. Apple doesn't need to advertise them and drum up awareness the way it would if it had to convince people to pay for them.

The Mac's System Software didn't have publicly acknowledged names until Jaguar/10.2

Is this a sarcastic response? Because I seriously doubt anyone will dislike software because of the codename it has. There's literally no connection, it's just a fun thing that Google does.

Nope, I'm entirely serious. Why do you think marketing is so effective?

The better the OS name, the more sales. Would you buy it if it was called OS X Donut? It would completely sound like a joke.

So what's the next Android OS name, considering the dessert/sweet theme? Jujyfruits?

My vote's for Jalebi, the sweet/snack from India.

Jello or Jelly. I like Jello, there's always room for Jello.
