For $550, would you go with an 256GB XR or 256GB XS? Both are new. I'm coming from an SE.

How I use my phone-
--Primarily texting, occasional calls, surfing the internet, watching occasional YouTube videos, taking pictures
--I sell things through etsy, and would like to take a good picture (the iPhone SE has been very frustrating to get good pics for my store)
--I take lots of pictures and dislike iCloud (and live in rural area where I don't always have reception, and never have a fast connection)
--Never play games
--I take some videos
--Would love to have telephoto so I can get better close-ups on my leather goods
--Battery life is important. I hate having to charge in the middle of the day
--I don't listen to music, so don't store music.
--I listen to podcasts
--I've maxed out the 64GB on my SE a couple of times
--I will probably be using this phone soon to connect to equipment to do energy audits on homes
--I worry about screen burn-in
--Worried about flicker

If you care about battery life, the XR is your only legitimate choice.

Since that sold, your obvious solution is to buy the XS, which is an amazing phone. The battery life isn’t the best, but it will easily serve you and your needs.

People might try to scam you on FB Marketplace, or offer you fake phones.

But if those are legit prices, i would definitely go with the Xs, unless you have issues with the PWM screen. Same price? Xs all the way. It is the better phone.

For me it's not about price, rather it's about need. I can get by with the XR, so I would buy that as I don't really need the features of a higher-end device.

There's a reason one is $300 more expensive at MSRP. At the same price, I think the XS is a no brainer. Less bezels, better screen, better camera, better one-handed use, better resale value. I don't think you need to worry about the XS not lasting through a full day. Coming from an SE, you also get the benefit of wireless charging which is a real game-changer.

I went with XR for a couple of months, then switched to XS. It was purely because I wanted the smaller screen, still very happy with my choice.

Yes, I worried a bit about OLED vs the trusty LCD. I’m used to the differences now, forgot all about it. No quality issues either.

Do you really need 256GB? A brand new XR is $599 from Apple.

Well, considering the OP said that was there two options between a 256 GB XR And 256 GB XS, I’d say that’s a yes. Plus, if they’re maxing out at ‘64 GB’, I wouldn't even risk 128 Gb, it’s always a safer bet to have more storage than less.

I ended up getting the XS 256GB (“new” official Apple replacement/refurb) for $475. Since I have very unreliable cell coverage in my area of my state, I need the local storage. iCloud just wouldn’t be useful since I couldn’t access it. But I think $475 was a good deal and beats an XR for $599!! I’m looking forward to playing around with it. I feel like I have culture shock going from the SE to XS. Even the power button is different!

The OLED screens used in the X, Xs, Xs Max, Pro and Pro Max use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) technology which causes headache and eye strain for some people. If you are not affected by this you do not need to worry.

Thank you, very useful, especially the listed remedies for those who may have problems with a PWM tech. 👍
