Especially for those not getting a phone until November and making several extra payments. Is Apple giving us more back on the trade in? Otherwise obviously better to sell it?

Seems like a raw deal for Apple's most loyal customers.

You can always get more by selling it vs, giving it back as part of AUP. It's just a PIA to sell to get $150 more than your payoff.

To my knowledge, there is no compensation from Apple. You are leasing the phone. It is no different than leasing a car. There is no such thing as having to make extra payments. You are paying as you normally would. Apple is not obligated to release a phone at a specific date and time for those on iAP. I don’t know why so many get the idea that they are entitled to special treatment from a lease. People need to read the lease agreed to.

I agree. Sometimes all the hassle to sale on Swappa to make $75-$125. Not worth it to me. During this time the used market gets heavily saturated. The 11 Pro Max is going back to apple after the 12 Pro Max arrives.

Exactly. I used to do the swappa ebay thing. Not worth it, especially after ebay and paypal fees and then shipping to someone who then breaks your balls over a tiny scratch.

Somewhat of an analogy to leasing a car but not the same. You actually own your phone while in the plan. You took out a loan for it based on your credit. Same as buying a car and financing it. You don't own the leased car. In theory, Apple does give you a trade in value for your phone and that trade in value just happens to equal the final 12 payments (or less). So in theory, you pay $1000 for a new phone as part of AUP, 12 months later they buy it back for $500 and pay off your loan. Similar to trading in a car with a loan payoff. The difference is on the car, they could give you more than the payoff based on trade in market value, which you put towards the new car. It would be great if Apple used market value. Wishful thinking. Apple is making a killing off AUP, but no one is forcing you to trade in the phone under AUP. You could get the new one as part of a new AUP, keep the old one, sell it, payoff the loan and pocket the extra. Not worth it in my experience.

I’m not leasing anything, I’m paying finance on a product that I’ll own at the end of the 20 month term. A car lease involves the car being returned to the leasing company regardless of payments made as the company own the car at all times. Apple pay the balance of my finance agreement when I upgrade. I can definitely see why people feel cheated if they have paid additional months over the minimum of 11 required. Apple are the only winner in this situation as they are owe the finance company less.

I've leased my last 5 cars. I lease every 3 years. My current lease is about to end and already looking into next lease. Guess what? I never return the car on that lease/ I go to car max and sell it to them. Yes you can trade in or sale you're lease vehicle.

The AUP isn’t a lease, it’s a finance agreement to purchase the iPhone. You opting to purchase a lease car at the end of your agreement is entirely different.

It's funny- this convo always degenerates into it's like a lease. It's not a lease it's a financing program with the option to sell your device back once a year.

If you get the 12 pro- and wait till November, you won't eligible to buy next year if you are in fact an annual upgrader.
Pretty sure with the X they announced some kind of waiver when this happened. That's what Im asking.

I am sure you are right and Apple will adjust when it comes time to get the Apple 13. At this point we already missed the 12 month (sep) so it will be 14 months for me. Thats not really the deal with IUP and since Apple failed to meets its yearly cycle, I expect they will adjust for this.

Exactly. Next year will be the gotcha when Apple releases new iPhone in September again. I had to pay for one more month when upgrading a couple years ago, maybe it was the X, because I didn’t get the phone until over a month after the launch date.

Right but if they don't do a modification to the program they are affecting their best customers most tho right? e.g in the case of a 3 month delay.

Those customers get 25% less for their trade (3 extra months of payments) in and have to pay 25% more for next year (have to pay an extra 3 months ahead before upgrading).

Talk about getting screwed with ya pants on

Apple never guarantees new iPhone release dates. It’s your fault for assuming that the IUP will get you the newest iPhone every year after exactly 12 payments on the last one. If you want it to work that way for you, get a new iPhone in January and you will almost be certain to work your 12 payment plan. Oh, I forgot, you have to have the new one as soon as it’s released. Can’t have your cake and eat it too.

That such utter hogwash.

OF course its for people who buy a new phone every year!

In fact, when the Store rep sold me on it he told me it was best for people for buy every year. Why would they have a program like this if they didn't update the phones every year?

And even if that weren't true it's the very first bullet on the program marketing materials. "get a new iphone every year"

not every 16 months- or 20 months like you try to falsely suggest in some weird defense of Apple.

I don't disagree with anything you just said. You can get a new iPhone every year. But your quote doesn't say get the new iPhone every year after just 12 payments guaranteed.

If Apple works things out for these people, then great for those affected and they should be grateful. If they don't, then there's really nothing to be upset about except for some terms that they read into the program that aren't there.

Quotes from the IUP age:
"The easiest way to upgrade to the newest iPhone"
"Get a new iPhone every year"
"You're eligible to upgrade to a new iPhone once you've made 12 payments."

Nowhere does it say get the new iPhone on launch day every year after only 12 payments. Those are your made-up expectations.

As I said in my first post, if you want to get a new iPhone every year after exactly 12 payments, buy it mid cycle and then there probably won't be any worries about getting the new model after 12 payments.

To buy into the IUP on iPhone launch day and expect that next years iPhone will launch in exactly 1 year and expect to get the new iPhone on launch day and expecting that you will only pay 12 payments for the last one, is hoping for the best.

Right but if they don't do a modification to the program they are affecting their best customers most tho right? e.g in the case of a 3 month delay.
I've had every iPhone since the original and have never been in the IUP. But you're their "best customers." 😆

Yawn....this subject, debate, complaining is a given thread with every annual new phone announcement.

I could give a hoot about how many payments are left, whether you call it a lease or not (and it isn’t) or the economic factors or disadvantages of getting in “the program”.

There are many ways to get THE newest phone every year without being in IUP. That said, I’m in, been in it since inception of it and I will get online at 8AM 11-6 to claim my 12 Pro Pacific Blue Max. I will put my 11 Pro Max in the box, return it and enjoy the latest and greatest. It’s jus easy. If the price went up, so be it. It did not and I will live with my forever payments to have the latest phone.

Yawn...yet you decide to chime in on the thread anyway with your opinion. $1200-$1500 for a phone is not a small amount for most people I would say. People write massive articles on the way to get the best price every year. I dont think being dismissive gives you a lot of credibility.

If you are so rich the price doesn't matter then why feel the need to chime in? do you have some bizarre need to defend Apple?

Like others have said they have refunded the excess payments in past years which is the appropriate action here. I expect they will do the same this year which is the answer I was looking for anyway.

Oh boy, I will just leave your crazy take on my post for what it is. It speaks for itself. I am not going back and forth with you on this topic. I have chimed in many times on this thread, I didn't just jump in with my opinion. Read through your own thread. And yes, yawn, more at the back and forth of others than your original inquiry. But come at me if you wish. Have a good day.

if it''s so boring why do you keep chiming in telling us how uninteresting it is for is to worry about paying so much more. If you have nothing substantive to add why keep chiming in as you point out.

Besides as others have stated Citizen has refunded the extra payments in past years which is is likely what they will do again whether you find it such a yawn or not.

I think what I have added is substantive, you may not, but others do. It's your thread though, I'll take my ball and go home. Just because you don't like what you hear/read doesn't mean an alternative view means someone is rich or an apple zealot, etc. I am a gadget freak, $50 a month for the latest phone is built into my lifestyle. It's a vice, I own it. Glad you got your money or whatever you were looking for from Citizens.

WHY AM I TALKING TO YOU! Must stop - unsubscribe.

Just replying over and over with the same thing is not substantive - it's borderline trolling

I am just gonna restate for people so it doesn't keep getting drowned out by your posts- that others have cited that in past years Citizen has refunded extra payments and that's what we should expect from Apple this year too
