Everyone is speaking about future proof and such things, so lets do a chart and we will see in real numbers what you reality expect from longevity of new Macbook Pro.
So please write your specs and how long do you plan to keep your new macbook pro m1 pro/max until you buy new one.

I start:
16” M1 Max 16/32/32/1TB - planning to keep it 5-7 years ?

I told myself this M1 Pro 16" will be my very last MBP for the next decade. The only mbp I am STILL using for music streaming is my beloved early 2015 MBP 13.

But we all know this is a lie for the next iteration or two out goes the old, in comes the new!

14"/16/1TB - I guess... 2-3 years.

Because I know for sure I'll want my MacBook to either have Face ID (less annoying than dealing with Touch ID), or thinner bezels.

Also Apple will for sure be able to solve fan noise and efficiency issues with 3nm on the horizon.

I have the early 2015 mbp and it is indeed beloved. I’m finally upgrading to the 14 base with 1tb and can only hope I get the same lifespan as my early 2015, which is/was a killer machine with the i7 3.1 16 ram and 1 tb!

I hope to keep it 5 years, just hoping apple increases the max nits through software in the near future. The 1tb purchase is my futureproofing.

For me at least 5 years. My accountant told me that I need to keep the computer that I take a business deduction on for at least 5 years.
Ask your accountant about the Section 179 deduction. You can expense most business assets without depreciating them if you so choose.

Considering how long I had my iMac this will replace (2011) I could say 10 years but I voted 5 because 10 years was really too long. I can't do any updates for the most part on it.

I don't really pick a set time, but probably around 5 years, looking for "big leaps" or when it's worth changing.

Generally I feel like I want to see ~ 80-100% performance increase in various components to notice enough of a difference.

Truthfully these M1 machines could probably last people a REALLY long time, but I do think there is a sweet spot where it makes sense to sell and still get some money out of the old machine. Prob in the 5-7 year range at oldest.

Things I'll be watching for in the future: wi-fi 7, av1 hardware decoding, cooler/quieter/lighter machines. Maybe other interesting break-throughs in wireless display communications or something.

I did the same but it's too long. You want to sell while it's still worth something and before it's too horrible to use. 5-7yrs is prob about right.

Probably 4 or 5 years unless Apple includes some really cool must have new feature. I have a feeling that this model is such a huge upgrade that future updates will be iterative for a few years.

I'm planning 3-4 years for now I got the full M1 Pro with 16GB of RAM, more than enough for my workloads.

as long as it runs snappy and Apple doesn't force cripple it with an OS update, ill keep it for 10 years. I can't imagine needing more than 5.5 gb/s SSD speeds or needing actions to be milliseconds faster. I'll probably Never sell this one but will buy additional smaller MacBook once I travel more again.

Maybe worth comparing resale value @ 5years (prob 50% off?) vs 10yrs to se if it's worth it. Also keep in mind at 5years you typically want a battery replacement ($150+), though with these new macbooks may not be needed until later.

But ya, almost no casual user will need anything faster than these for a long time. Maybe if Zuck gets his way and everyone wants to be in the metaverse with vr and better graphics :)
