wrong question, ask how long they kept their last one. :)
That will give you relatively honest answers (atleast more honest than what people "think" they will do).
I got the 15" gen3 butterfly keyboard (1TB SSD, i9, 32GB RAM) right before the 16" Intel was announced, but still plan ti keep it till M3 or till it literally dies in my arm(s) hehe.

Before that I had a 2012 that I kept running and on life support till I got this one.

Technology has slowed greatly for all devices. At this point there is very little to add to a device, just small increases in power, etc. I've had my current iPhone for almost three years and until Touch ID turns to the iPhone I won't upgrade. This MacBook Pro 2021 is so fast it can easily last me 4-6 years.

Ask your accountant about the Section 179 deduction. You can expense most business assets without depreciating them if you so choose.

Thanks will do. What happens if I sell it after I take the deduction? Is it treated as business income because I took the immediate deduction?

2016 MBP 15 lasted me the full 5 yrs

In theory I'd wait another 5 yrs, but I think in reality given this is Apple's first gen processor, I'll probably do an upgrade at year 2 or 3 provided it's not just the typical annual speed increase.

Yes. The 179 Deduction just enables you to fully write off the asset in year one. If you sell it prior to its depreciable life, any amount you get above the depreciated value would be taxable. But definitely explore this with your accountant. Although Macs hold their value better than PCs, the amount you sell it for may not be much more than the depreciation value. Section 179 comes in handy in a year when you need to reduce your taxable income.

My 3 rules, if one of the following happens, I upgrade:
  1. If I can no longer receive software updates
  2. If a game changing feature is added that is useful to me (not for FOMO)
  3. If a new hardware is released with at least +2.5x benchmark difference (and other factors)

I usually buy the 1st model of the redesign as soon as it comes out and spec it a little on higher side for future spoofing and resell value. Then wait for another major design from Apple, from what I have seen, is around 4-5 years from generation to generation. So I will keeping it for 4-5 years then sell it to offset the price of the new one.

My last MacBook Pro is a 2013 model. It's still perfectly functional. Actually, I'm pretty sure the keyboard is better than the current models. That was a great keyboard.

Everyone is speaking about future proof and such things, so lets do a chart and we will see in real numbers what you reality expect from longevity of new Macbook Pro.
So please write your specs and how long do you plan to keep your new macbook pro m1 pro/max until you buy new one.

I start:
16” M1 Max 16/32/32/1TB - planning to keep it 5-7 years ?
I like to upgrade every other year. This year might be the exception -- I bought the M1 MBP in August 2021 but I'm already considering purchasing the 16 Pro

Laptops I update everytime there is a 25% performance threshold. So probably 1.5 to 2 years.

Desktops not so because I tend to buy very expensive systems that need to be rock solid.

16" Max/64/4 TB. 5 years or whenever it can no longer get the job done. Whichever comes first.

I told myself this M1 Pro 16" will be my very last MBP for the next decade. The only mbp I am STILL using for music streaming is my beloved early 2015 MBP 13.

But we all know this is a lie for the next iteration or two out goes the old, in comes the new!
Yes…I told my wife that when I bought the MacBook Pro 2018…

I am hoping not to be disappointed with the new 16”. From so far what I heard, It looks like I will not..but how long before there are any issues with hardware etc. being a first edition..who knows…but..

I believe Apple spent some time with this one to make sure they don’t have issues or to minimize part replacements. They lost money on the design defects functionally (not form wise…beautiful design) during the 2016-2019 era.

Can’t justify another costly purchased for “10 years” or more with the wife.

Mac Pro 2013 - bought 2016 (said that was it)

MacBook Pro 2018 - bought 2018 RIGHT before the GPU upgrade that a month before (said that was it..no more)

MacBook Pro 2021 (in hope to make up for the other two)..

With MacBook Pro 2021 at $5,000 after Apple Care+…Apple needs to offer “Wife” Care+ for free, not a $20 screen polish tissue.. should be included…

I use these for my job (video editing). THIS BETTER be it…

our efforts will be futile, I'm still on the fence between the 14 and 16 even though I have a very capable M1 13, but I know I'll capitulate in a couple of weeks and then repeat the same impulsive sins next year

Until they come out with a new feature that makes the next one much better. However, given the new ones fix 99% of the old issues and have no major issues out of the bat, I don't think it'll be necessary to upgrade as often from here out

Like last time, it was worth upgrading because the Intel/AMD chips were so ass and the keyboard kept getting revised, but all of that is over now

Precisely until a better option comes along that improves my productivity. I would never put a time stamp on that in advance. If something better comes tomorrow, it's tomorrow. If it's not for 5 more years, then in 5 years.

That's how PROfessionals make purchasing decisions. You know, for PRO products.

Depends how long Apple provides OS support and how much Apple Silicon improves every year.

Short in my book would be 3 - 5 years. Normal would be 6 - 8 years. Anything over 8 years would be long.

I am shooting for 6-8 years, but that might be shorter if there are a lot of improvements every year or longer if Apple's next redesign isn't to my liking.

14" Pro 10CPU/14GPU/32RAM/1TB

5-10 years depends on new models

I do want to change my 1080p external monitor to a 1440p though
