I've been having this issue daily a month or two after getting my MBP. It pops often and I finally have no upcoming projects/time to bring it in. For those who brought theirs in, were they able to fix this issue? My workspace is in my room, so it annoys me when I'm watching tv and hear it popping (it even pops while it's sleeping). Also, how long was the repair time?

Hi

I’ve had a similar problem and my MBP isn’t fixed yet. Like you, I can’t take it back in due to work.

There seems to be a few reasons why the MBP 2016/17 does this. In my case it seems to be triggered by the software sound system (CoreAudio?) shutting on and off and that causing a physical effect near/in both speakers.

For the moment, if you are having similar issues to me, if you turn off all application event sounds (mail, messages, reminders etc) that might help you stay sane until it’s fixed.

Good luck.

Made an appt. for tomorrow morning. Hoping they're able to fix the issue!

Update*

Received a call from Apple saying my MBP is ready for pick-up. (Brought it in for the popping noise issue.) When the employee brought it out, I noticed there were 3 chip marks and a 1.5in scratch. The specialist then spoke to his manager and said I could either keep it or send it back again (it'll take a week). I decided to send it back and have the display case replaced. My MBP has never left my desk and I sent it in pristine condition. Now to wait till next week to get it back!

The Genius Bar specialist originally noted that they'll only replace the top case, but from the repair summary, they've replaced the Display Assembly (Symptom: Cosmetic defects, not sure why, when I gave it to them in excellent condition), Top Case w/battery (Symptom: Trackpad requires high click force?) & Vent/Antenna Module (Symptom: Mechanical Damage/Cosmetic Issues?). I'll report back next week to see if this fixed the popping issue, but I did notice my keyboard had the 2017 symbols.

That is very bad on the repair depot to send a unit back in such poor physical condition. Please let us know what happens next week and hopefully all will be good.

They told me they were gonna send it back to the repair center, but the status online shows that it’s being repaired in store. I’ll keep this thread updated!

The "popping sound" is produced by a part of the display assembly under heat expansion and there is not much one can do about it. ALL 2016/2017 MBPs I have had in my hands do it. Its a quirk of the laptop design and can't really be solved by a repair. You can very easily trigger it by pressing with two fingers in the middle bottom part of the display assembly.

It might go away for a while if they repair it but it will come back. Since it doesn't actually affect the functionality of the laptop, I am very surprised that Apple is even treating it as a warranty issue.

Or do you mean some other "popping noise"?

Hi everyone.

Since when I bought my MacBook Pro (March 2017), I've been listening to some pops that apparently is coming out of the lid (bottom part of it, from the outside). Its impossible to work with recording audio, which is what I do :/

I searched the web and another bunch of people are saying the same thing, but I haven't seen any solution so far.

Does anyone know if is there any way to make it stop? Is Apple solving the problem when we take the MBP to AppleCare?

I called Apple Support and the guy kind of didn't know what I was talking about. I'm afraid I'm going to send my laptop away for a month and still have the problem afterwards.

Anyways, if any of you had the problem and got it fixed, give me shout out, please!

PS - I recorded the sounds, but I'm not able to post them here. So I found the same noise in a Vimeo Video, and here it is:

hate to suggest this but...

Have you tried using it with an external monitor and keyboard and keep the lid closed? Basically clam shell operation. This is only to see if the sound goes away or becomes quieter.

Update*

I picked up my MBP from my local Apple store today and so far no loud popping noise. (Hope they fixed it!) Apple ended up replacing the entire display enclosure twice (the first time there was damage), the entire top case (I now have the 2017 keyboard and battery cycle is at 2) & the vent/antenna (not sure why lol). So far, so good!

I had the popping sound with my MacBook Pro TB 2016. Apple sent it for repair 3 times. At the end they exchanged it with the 2017 model. It was working great for like 3 months and the popping sound has started again. It occurs when you use the Photo app. Very annoying. I thought the problem was fixed with the 2017 models, but no! So I am away from Canada for 5 months and I don't have an Apple store where I am working currently. So I will have to deal with that noise for all these months. I hope it doesn't get worst.

I am sure Apple knows that it's an issue but don't have a solution for that. It is sad. I love my new MacBook Pro but that popping sound is very disturbing.
