Unless I'm somehow overlooking it there doesn't seem to be any such distortion issue with mine that I can see so far :)

I've already checked for dead pixels and very happy to see there are none, so that's really good.

Any other common hardware faults I should know about and look out for in mine before my return window expires?

None come to mind, but I wouldn't actively seek problems. Just use your device and if any problems are notified in your day-to-day usage, them return it.

After being strong and resisting upgrading, I bought an Air 2 a couple of weeks ago to replace my original Air because the Staples deal was so attractive. congrats, and welcome to the club! Don't freak out looking for problems.

I just bought an air 2 the other day and don't regret it. The last iPad I truly loved was the iPad 2 and the air 2 reminds me of that.

One the affected units, it comes from applying pressure on the mid-right side of the back of the device. It's only an issue with some devices. For instance, mine doesn't do it at all, but one I bought (and returned) did it just by walking with it in your hand.

Mine does that but it's the first time I've noticed it because it's not often I squeeze my iPad half to death.

I think you've got it covered. The display distortion is an odd issue. I don't know whether it results from assembly variations (a little too much glue here or there?) or whether some design element was changed internally to avoid having something press on the display.

iPad Air 3 with Pencil: Buy

iPad Air 3 no Pencil: No Buy

pretty sure the pencil will only be available for the "Pro" models of the iPad....so don't hold your breath on it appearing any time soon on the Air...

See response above.

No, I love the Air 2. I had a 16gb that was really cramped for storage. I recently sold it to get a better resale value before the 3 came out. After about a week, I regretted it and missed having an iPad. I decided to look for a deal on another air 2 and ended up striking gold on my local Craigslist. I found a space gray 128gb air 2 in mint condition for 350. Older lady had purchased it for her granddaughter who didn't end up using it. I'll most likely hang on to this one at least until the air 4 comes out.

Long story short, anyone would be fine purchasing the air 2. It's a great device.

I got my Air 2 in September or October 2015. It's the first iPad that's an update in every way to the iPad mini I had: processor and RAM allowing for split-view, wifi, camera.

It's going to be quite a few years before another iPad improves on everything in the Air 2. There's no reason to regret getting an Air 2.

I got my Air 2 when/just after the refurbs became available in the UK which I think was July last year. I don't care if they release an Air 3 in March, unless it has pencil support in which case I'll be debating whether to upgrade the Air 2, or just buying a Pro. I have a feeling I'll go with the latter (and keep my Air 2 for when I need a really portable device).

no, because things have to come out at some point, and someone will always have bought the previous model just before.

I know with apple stuff in particular, people like to predict when the new one will come out, perhaps so they can time a purchase, or time when they sell the old one for best return. But does it really matter?

I got burned with the ipad 3 when they superceded it so quickly. This time at least they've done the opposite and given the Air 2 an 18 month cycle rather than a 6 month one.

I would prefer them to stick to a schedule if possible though.

As for this specific release - I got my air 2 at launch, so I'd be up for an Air 3 as a replacement, but if it only has a faster processor I may skip it. If it has pencil support I'm in.

I guess I lied because 2GB of RAM is a non-starter so I will not be getting the iPad Pro 9.7.

Gonna spend my money on the iPhone SE instead.
