To my eyes, the camera is quite a bit better in many shooting situations, particularly low light. We were at a school Halloween event at dusk last night and the camera did an outstanding job bringing out color and light. I’d say this aspect, more than anything else, blows away the X.

The A12 is definitely faster than the A11. I notice it all the time. Since the A11 was already very fast, what this additional speed translates to is smoothness. It’s like putting extra polish on the speed and responsiveness that was already present in last years model. It won’t make tasks all that much faster to complete, but it does make the phone more pleasing to use.

The speaker is significantly louder and sounds far better at max volume.

FaceID is both more responsive and works in a wider range of angles. Not a huge difference but it’s there.

That all said, the X is still an outstanding phone if you want to save money.

Thanks all!

Seems like, for me at least, the biggest reason to put out fresh dollars to upgrade would be for that GOLD haha.

I use a case on my space gray iPhone X but I’d probably go caseless if I upgraded to a gold XS just to show it off lol.

The camera improvement, for me, doesn’t matter too much especially since the selfie camera got that smoothening effect which isn’t my cup of tea tbh.

Battery life is always meh for me bc I use my iPhone so much and keep that screen BRIGHT.

While my X feels really fast, no complaints, if the XS felt noticeably faster that would be a consideration. I just like super snappy and fast phones. But it seems like it’s not too noticeable for many people just for doing regular things like launching notes, calendar, etc.

I do value high quality speakers in a phone, and would love to get the best Apple has to offer. But I’m hesitant to shell out 999 just for that.

In conclusion,

Based on my values the main reason why I’d want the XS is bc of that GOLD color and the new speakers.

And while I am tempted, shelling out a fresh 999 feels really hard to do...

And then if Apple comes out next year with a new iPhone that’s bananas, I’ll be feeling like crap lol. So maybe it’s best I just chill for now with my X. But I guess we’ll see.

So you never use rear camera??

And I don’t care. There is no software difference and the hardware difference is neglectable.

Sure...if that makes you sleep better at night....

Well usually I get anxiety if I have to ask a stranger to take a pic even if it is our restaurant waiter so I prefer using the selfie camera tbh

There it is.
You betcha! I was never going to let you limit my answer by the op’s question. The truth is where you find it, not where you want me to keep looking for it.

See! As I told you, it’s neither the performance nor the camera. A real reason to upgrade from X to XS does not exist. One should rather buy an Apple Watch.

No difference at all. Yup. Except DxO. Except Anandtech. Except numerous reviewers. No difference at all.

A difference is not a reason. AnandTech has an incredible article on how impressive the A11 Bionic’s performance already is, beating the Core i5 in a MacBook Pro 2017. Yes the A12 is another technological marvel. But what’s the point in selling a marvel to buy a marvel? There is no reason.

I love the new Apple Watch, but the thing is I don’t really like wearing a watch. Would be nice though if I started.

Series 4 looks really nice. I just wished the crown wasn’t off-centered. Put it in the middle and would look like a real premium watch.

My iPhone XS takes much better photos - especially in low-light. The speakers are much louder / seem to sound better in general. The FaceID is just about the same for me. If anything, it's a super-small fraction of a second faster. iOS 12 makes up a bigger portion of the upgrade.

On the unfortunate side though, I never saw a yellow -> blue shift on my iPhone X, but my iPhone XS has a super-obvious (to me) yellow face-up color value that shifts to blue almost immediately when I have a mostly white screen (It's enough to see the difference when one-hand typing - it almost looks like it's flashing yellow when centered).
