Another tax that California levies against their citizens. Coming soon to a state near you.

Yep, true. Just found this officially on the Best Buy site:

The electronic waste recycling fee applies to video display products such as computer monitors and TVs sold in California. This fee is used to offset the cost of properly recycling these items.

What's a recycle fee?

Sounds like a similar system to what we have here: when you buy any home electronic device you pay a 'small' fee which covers recycling. It includes "free product takeback". If you have a new TV, fridge or cooker etc. delivered to your house, they will take away your old device for no additional charge and have it cleanly and safely recycled.

Thank GOD no recycling fee in NJ.....YET

I'm sure we will jump in and be on par....then higher than everyone else in the country....that's what NJ likes to do  they just haven't thought of it yet....

Electronic devices that meets specified criteria are subject to the fee. iPads do not meet all the critera. Therefore, they are not considered covered electronic devices and not subject to the fee. If you are charged a fee for the iPad, request a refund. I specialize in sales tax and have confirmed this with the CA Board of Equalization and the CA Dept of Toxic Substances Control. As of today, only the state of CA imposes this fee.
