Can they get something else they need with the reward points?

I had an ipad 3 and went to the mini, the retina screen only bothers me in Safari because i find the text to small and blurry in portrait mode on most sites. What does bother me more is the RAM, there is only 512MB and nothing stays in memory so multitasking is almost non-existent.

Now with iOS7 i find things ever so slightly laggy (i always notice that sort of thing).

Having said that i've used mine for almost a year now and i still love it.

I don't know, my dad plays so much that he always has reward points but they expire at the end of the year, which is why December always has the most "premium" reward products.

My mom is currently using a crappy 2012 Nexus 7 and I know she wants a mini herself so maybe I should just let her use the mini and she'll give the Nexus to my dad who's a big Apple boycotter.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I found the iPad mini screen to be significantly inferior to the Retina model.

I still owned one up until a few days ago but I always disliked the screen, particularily when I was using it to read; text was pixelated, undefined, and soft.

Contrast and color gamut were also lower than my iPad 4.

With a Retina display most likely for the new iteration, Apple will have the mini perfected.

I recently had to sell my ipad 3 for financial reasons. My parents have casino reward points and they say in December for their points they can get an ipad mini (first generation), 32 GB. For those who have the first mini, is the screen so much inferior that it's worth passing up the deal to get the mini retina when it comes out tomorrow? Or should I tell my parents to order the mini first-gen for me?

Funny, I know about that promotion you're speaking of with the casino. I saw the catalog. My parents points were enough for the 16GB wifi only - not worth it unless they could get a cellular version.. We're waiting for the announcement today. They decided to get the iPad 5 instead in the coming weeks. We hope we can get one by Nov. 15th. They won't be in town for months and won't be available for that Dec. event the casino is hosting.

I haven't posted here in a LONG time, but I will agree with this. I've owned every generation of iPad except for the Mini. I actually ended up picking up a Nexus 7 just for kicks and giggles and have to say that the screen is far more pleasing than the Mini's non retina display.

That said, I am anticipating today's event I am really hoping that the iPad Mini gets a retina display. If it does, I will most likely get one.

Wow it's a small world. :D

I have a mini and an iPad 3, and weirdly enough, when the non-retina of the mini bothers me is when I'm playing games. The colors don't quite come out as bright and clear on the mini as on the retina iPad. Other than that, the mini screen doesn't bother me.

This. It's not so much the resolution as the lessor color quality and contrast.

I'm thinking I'll be trading over to an iPad 5 soon. In your case, they may very well switch what's being offered in December anyway. So you'll have time to go to a store and take a look at whatever models are currently being offered.

Damn. Retina mini has a price bump. Guess I'll tell my parents to use their casino points after all.

Uhoh. New dilemma. Turns out my dad has enough points for the 16 GB cellular version.

32 GB wifi or 16 GB cellular?

How often will you want to use it where you won't have wifi? I got the cell version, and am happy with that. I can use it without worrying if I've got a wifi connection somewhere or not, or the kids can use it when I'm driving, etc. I COULD tether back to my iPhone, but then there's two devices chewing on batteries.

New Air for me if anything. I have a mini already with cellular and I rather not spend $399 for new one with retina without it so ...

I mostly used my ipad to read books, play games, and watch movies while I'm home.

The cell version would be cool, but at this point I'm worried about the 16 GB. On my old iphone 4s it seems as if I was short on memory and all I had on there was some songs, pictures, apps, and that's it. Not a big library of stuff at all. App sizes seem to be getting bigger and bigger and I worry that 16 GB just isn't enough.

Get the Mini Retina. I've got two Mini's for my kids, and the iPad w/Retina. It's definitely worth it. Can't stand the Mini in portrait mode but would enjoy it with Retina.

I usually hold the mini about 12 inches from my face when reading. For me pixelation is barely noticeable most of the time at this distance. Most of the time when I am in apps it looks great. The only time lack of retina is really noticeable for me is when I am out on the main screen. I don't play graphic intensive games so that is not an issue either. Most of the games I play are board game ports or simple puzzlers like world of goo, and they all usually look fantastic. Therefore I would recommend getting the 1st gen mini unless you are a big gamer wanting to play graphic intensive things, or want to hold the device really close to your face when reading.

It's not the screen, it's the processor/ram. I have a couple games that crash due to the 512mb limitation..the first gen iPad mini and the iPad 2 need to be put to pasture..

Sigh ... I'm going to tell my parents to get it mostly because parents ... they're the best ... When I told them I sold my ipad 3 I started crying and my dad, who is the biggest google fanboy in the world, and said he'd never willingly get an Apple product, immediately said he'd use his reward points. I'd be hurting his feelings even though the mini 2 is so much nicer ...

If you have never had a retina iPhone, never had a retina iPad, mini is fine.

As soon as your eyes get used to retina, mini 1 is CRAP.

the screen is too small to read webpages/pdf on default size, when you enlarge the content, all you see is pixels...

However, if you can skip reading PDF, and browsing the web, mini 1's screen is acceptable and actually looks quite decent running most apps. iBook viewing (non-PDF) is good enough.

But for my needs, lots of web browsing and pdf, mini 1 is CRAP!!!

:)

I don't know. I don't have the best eyesight but I find the mini to be fine. I've owned the iPhone 4 in the past and currently have the 5th gen iPad mini which has a retina display and a samsung galaxy s4 with a ppi in excess of 400. I'll still upgrade my mini 1 though.

Say that again?? :D

Lol I've only been awake for an hour so give me a break lol but who's to say I'm not from the future. Anyhow I meant to say the 5th gen ipod touch. I'm a girl by the way :)

Minis screen is good don't buy into marketing ********, no its not as good as the excellent retina display but its still good and on the smaller screen of the Mini its great. Movies, book reading, gaming I have found nothign were I think...... that is bad. I also own a iPad 3 and still use the Mini the majority of the time.
