For what it's worth: battery charging times 3gs

it took me about 2.5 hrs to charge from 2% to 100% with the phone powered down for the first 80% of it. seems longer than most phones but probably not by much. kinda a dumb thread, but just curious.

I usually charge it at 40% cause I"m paranoid about it running out. that's probably bad for the battery life

You should run it all the way down once a month. I know a lot of people on here do that. I think it helps calibrate your battery.
