So I got my X delivered ahead of time a few days ago to replace my SE. Based on all the hype and whining and praising around here so far, my thoughts on the device:
  • Size - It's definitely a huge step up from the SE that this is probably the single biggest thing that I've had to get used to. It's pretty much on the edge of what I'd want to carry around with me all the time. Anything larger would be rather awkward.
  • FaceID - Works OK. Has it's moments when I suspect it might struggle, and generally works when I expect it to. Definitely more convenient to just pick up the phone and swipe up to unlock.
  • OLED - When I first got the phone I was like OK, I totally get where people were coming from in terms of colour and brightness, but then I was doing what everybody else was doing and comparing it to what was sat next to me. After turning off True Tone and simply using it without comparing, the screen is sublime. Now, a few days later, it makes my SE look so garish and inaccurate.
  • Camera - Stunning, nothing more to say really, especially coming from the SE
  • Notch - What notch? Actually, I take that back - I like the fact that the screen conforms around it and provides some genuinely useful areas to put stuff either side. Also, whether you like it or not it does define it as an iPhone. I was at a comedy gig at Birmingham Arena on Sunday night and a guy two seats away leaned over and was asking me all about it as he wanted one. In the dark it could have been any other iPhone or Android device really.
  • Battery - Well, all I can say is it eats my SE for breakfast. I thought that was more than adequate for my needs based on my usage patterns. The X is in a whole new league. I got up at 6:30am this morning, and even now, 3 hours later, having sent several e-mails and messages, it's still showing 100%. Even when I was away at Birmingham on Sunday taking loads of photos and sending them around, it was still over 60% remaining when we went to bed around midnight. So, if this is any indicator, those who say their battery life is terrible, either you got a duff unit (unlikely) or you spend waaaaaaaay too much time glued to the screen.
So yeah, loving the X as a genuine upgrade. I guess if I'd have caved in and got an or 8 plus, then upgraded, I may not be so overwhelmingly optimistic about it given the similarity in performance, but for me this is a huge step up. For my hands, definitely no need for the brick that'll be iPhone X Plus, but each unto their own.

I'd add fluid & sublime performance.
There are some posts about Face ID improving with time. If this is true, then Machine learning has truly arrived and the future of smartphone is on a good trajectory!
I also wonder if the X plus would feel like an ipad-mini with uncomfortable heft.

Yeah it’s defititely fluid, but to be fair so was my SE as that’s really the guts of a 6S which is no slouch. As for plus sized phones, just don’t see the point. They are a compromise in every way for me. Too big to be comfortable to hold, yet too small to offer a tangible upgrade on watching media. My phone is my phone and I literally use it for mostly calls, messages, emails and the odd maps use. I guess that’s why I get such good battery out of it. Music too I guess on Google Play. At home I have big TVs to watch stuff on, and out and about away on business I’ll take my iPad Pro.

I imagine the iPhone X Plus will likely be still somewhat comfortable to hold, given the larger size, due to it likely being longer and more narrow. But I look forward to the larger display personally.

This makes sense. Everyday I feel like Face ID is better and better. The first day I had a few hiccups, the second day was smooth, now I barely have an issue.
