I have got my macbook pro running Snow Leopard hooked up to my HD projector via VGA cable (a Hitachi PJ-TX300). I am trying to get the sodding thing to let me run it at 1280x720 but it has decided that it will only let me do 1280x768 or 1024x768. This is driving me nuts as its not utilising the screen properly.

Any ideas how to force it to run 1280x720?

SwitchResX should do what you want--it's supposed to let you select just about anything as an output resolution.

That said, are you sure your projector actually accepts a 1280x720 resolution? I had a TV that, despite the physical panel being 1366 x 768, simply would not accept an input signal at that resolution--it required 1280x768, and would then stretch horizontally to fit. Kind of maddening.
