Since at least iOS 14.2 and the beginning of my daily usage of AirPods Max, I’ve been running into this notification.

I did some research and saw conflicting answers from folks, but in my experience this functionality and notification could not be turned off on my iPhone 12 Pro Max in the USA. And yes, Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety > Reduce Loud Sounds is already turned off.

But today, for the first time since updating to iOS 14.4, the notification and functionality appear to have changed when triggered:

I haven’t changed anything other than updating my iOS. Did Apple fix this and just not mention it in the patch notes? What’s been your experience?

My husband is hard of hearing and this forced volume reduction on his iPhone SE means he cannot hear when he is out for a walk. He cannot use noise cancelling headphones because they limit the range he is most unable to hear. Is there any provision in Apple iOS 14.4 to override the “protection” of his hearing by Apple? It means he can barely hear his audio books or podcasts he enjoys listening to on his walks. He tried to turn off the volume limiting and to clear out his Health/sounds record.

One question about this function.. is it only about the speaker volume being classed in the program as too high or is the iOS14.4 now listening to ambient noise levels as well... Our grandsons come to visit us and the volume of their play is probably > 100dB!
