Forced Restart

So I'm sitting in my economics lecture typing notes and all of a sudden my MBP starts to dim horizontally from the top of the screen to the bottom and the restart prompt appears. Anyone know what caused this?

Did it look like this? If so its a kernel panic, and that could mean hardware problems:

if it's not a kernel panic or a hardware problem, was the battery low?

i had a friend who's laptop did that when his (defective) battery was under 2% because it would not supply enough power for the hard drive etc.
