I'm actually surprised :). I can confirm that for me they seemed to be able to force this update to your car. At least that's how my ford got its update.

Unfortunately, Ford cannot push updates. Updating is not done over the air. It's always been done via USB.

When you log in to Syncmyride.com it will let you know if you have an update available (3.8 for ford/Lincoln Touch versions). It will walk you through the process.

So when Ford says it's a global update, they mean the part of the globe that's in North America? :)

U have to still think .... That's always gonna be a detraction, and no one can say its not.
It's "distraction".
Let the driving data gathering begin. In this situation I think Apple is like becoming Google. I assume they will start harvesting our driving data. With that information it's very critical for the development of iCar. It's happening they just need more information and the only way to get them is through CarPlay and of course Siri.
None of that is remotely true.
Fords way to see if they can avoid having full CarPlay in their cars.
Carplay is coming to Sync3, not Sync2. Completely different hardware/software platform. It would be nice if they would complete it, though.

Ford always bragged about Sync being updatable but the updates were always lackluster and so spread out that to get anything that was really new, you have to buy a new car.

I have been using this update for a month now and its a really crappy implementation, especially for 2014-2015 vehicles not being able to support carplay or a hardware upgrade. This requires you to hold down the voice control button for 5 seconds and you are prompted with the Siri beep which works about 3/4 of the time. It is slow and cumbersome and gives you no visual feedback even on the 8 inch MyfordTouch display so if your using it for navigation you are still forced to look at your phone. At least give us the ability to send navigation destinations to our cars nav using Siri as the current voice prompts required to be said exact are ridiculous on sync.

way to go Ford! Companies that realize that the new model of providing updates to keep up with technology is the future.

My BMW was useless when I drove it out the dealership. $200 a year for map updates! WtF

I'll take a BMW 4 w/o Siri Eyes over a fully loaded Mustang every day, all day. BMW isn't about value. You understand that going in. You also understand you buy a BMW for the way it drives. If you think yours was "useless" when you drove out you bought the wrong car for you, that's all.

That said annual map updates are now included with all Bimmers. Also they include maintenance - oil change, wiper replacement, brakes, etc which Ford does not.

I just checked the Ford Portal and it says no update is available for me. I have a 2014 Ford F-150 XLT. The portal says my software is up-to-date.

Anybody else have this problem?

I still dunno....

This whole thing of "keeping your eyes on the road" vs Siri-eyes Free so u can just press a button on the steering wheel, to help with trying to know where u are going instead of being detracted.. lets face it, it's still detraction ..

Doesn't matter how much or how little... then again we all use hands free anyway in company cars today, and that's seems to be ok..

Times were allot simpler when u just got in the car and it went,,, no tech to worry about.. Now days we must decide how much and how little we can use it when car markers try and "avoid" the police at the same time by making it "less detracting"

Trying to read a map, look at directions and calculate distances between turns was big distraction.

Although Siri needs to be updated to allow voice corrections by spelling out words. That's the biggest pain if I need Siri to take me somewhere but it can't figure out the spelling of the street that I want to go to. So instead it will autocorrect, find the wrong street and try to take me there. If I'm not paying attention to the autocorrection I can end up on the wrong side of town. Which is a problem I had until I learned to watch what Siri is writing rather than assume it understood me. When it's prompts indicate it did. Rather than asking me to clarify, choose from a list of possible options or spell out the word it can't understand. The lack of voice correction is also a huge problem for text messages.

If I know Siri can't spell a word. I should also be able to simply spell it out. Rather than Siri trying interpret the letters into words.

Wow. Ford was pretty far from the top of my list in terms of cars to look at. This is the kind of thing that will make me take a much closer look next time around and a really refreshing alternative to various manufacturers' attempts at connected systems. Maybe some other companies will learn a thing or two.

My current car, for instance, is great, but I wouldn't touch the current iteration due to the rather pathetic "connected platform" included in all models. I just hope they scrap the attempt and move to CarPlay sooner rather than later.

Tesla sends out software updates for the entire car on a regular basis. A few months ago they sent out a software update that adjusted the logic that the electric motors used that boosted the range by 20%. Last month they turned on autopilot on existing cars, which meant that overnight people's cars learned to drive and park themselves.

So it's cute that Ford thinks updating the software on its entertainment console is a big deal.

I'm not dealing with any crap from the auto industry anymore. I'm driving my Buick until it breaks down, trading it in as scrap metal, and getting a Tesla.

Detraction, eh? I hadn't heard that one before. At first, I thought it was just a typo for the word distraction, but then you repeated varying forms four times in the post so I figured I had better look it up.

---------------
Definition Detraction:

1 a lessening of reputation or esteem especially by envious, malicious, or petty criticism : belittling, disparagement

2 a taking away <it is no detraction from its dignity or prestige — J. F. Golay>
---------------

So by using Ford's Siri Eyes Free, you are lowering your prestige level? Well, I can believe that about driving a Ford in general, but how does using Siri lower your prestige even more? I know talking to a car can seem strange....

As for getting in a car and just driving, I don't remember those days too well. I mean CB Radio existed long before cell phones and truckers somehow managed to drive those giant rigs and talk on the CBs without killing themselves or others (most of the time) and they typically have about twice as many gears to shift as a manual car or pickup truck. I had CB Radio before cell phone for emergencies and chatting with the truckers. I also used to eat sandwiches while driving and drink coffee and I drove a stick shift for over 22 years and nothing else. How did I manage to do that without causing a single wreck in my entire life? Oh yeah, it's called dexterity and coordination. If you have it, you can generally tap your head and rub your tummy at the same time. If you don't, we're probably better off with Google's self-driving car taking you where you need to go (or a bus).

The key with having a conversation on the phone (hands free of course) while driving is to notice that you're entering a high traffic situation (intersection, whatever) and **** for a second until you're past it. You're less likely to cause a wreck if no one is around you on the freeway while talking, but driving along a crowded street with tons of traffic probably needs a little more common sense. If the people were in the car with you when you were driving, they'd probably be quiet automatically if you were in a bad situation or you would just ignore them. It shouldn't be any different on a phone. Similarly, on a CB radio, you don't just pick up the mic while turning a 90 degree turn and shifting into 2nd gear. You talk when it's safe to do so. The problem with some people today is they HAVE NO FRACKING COMMON SENSE when it comes to this crap. Answering a text message or checking your email? NEVER SAFE. Pull over if you have to do it. Some people are so daft that the probably have it coming and it's just a damn shame they will probably take some innocent person with them when it happens.

Have had this in our 2015 F-150 Lariat since we bought it 5 weeks ago ... works very well. Had no issues with the install (I choose to DIY rather than ask the dealer to do it) and it performs well. I particularly like using Siri to dictate messages.

I have not yet found a way to have Siri find something (say the location of a POI) and then transfer it directly (or even indirectly) to the on board navigation system. Yes, I can use Apple Maps, but I prefer to use the on board system.

Cheers!!

Ken

I have that same model, and it runs Sync version 1, which is not compatible with this update. Pretty sure they're not doing anything with version 1, even though they advertise the Sync software as upgradable. They haven't put out an update to this version since it came out from what I can see when I log into the portal.

I wonder how easy/difficult it would be to retrofit full CarPlay support. I don't expect Ford (or any other automaker) to do it, simply because of profit of new cars. But if it's as simple as updating the firmware, it would be nice to know that I should be directing my anger at the automaker for just not doing it.

I would be willing to bet it would be easy. It's a computer running an operating system, if they wanted to add new features for the owners, they very easily could. Clearly they have the ability to update, they just choose not to for the sake of profits. Jerks.

Ford actually makes good cars. The Focus is good, the Fusion looks fantastic (although for driving purposes the Mazda 6 is more fun), their trucks are the industry standard, then there is the Mustang, which is pretty good too. The Ford Flex is underrated, but it's good.

Overall, Ford is doing well with cars. I personally like Ford a lot more than anything GM.

When I first purchased back in July, there was an update available and I was able to apply it. It brought some pretty useful features, such as being able to zoom in the rear camera.

Checking the news release, it appears that this is only available for Sync with MyFord Touch, not Sync with MyFord. So, I guess I'm out of luck.

I have a 2004 BMW, I changed the CD changer to the BMW iPhone interface and now my iPhone acts as a music player, GPS, Hey Siri works through the cars Bluetooth.
GPS's in cars are now becoming a thing of the past. Like you said, you spend money on a GPS update every year, and this is after you spend over 3000 for the GPS option.
Car play is good, but if your car didn't come with it, simply plug in your iPhone to the Apple connector and you're set.

Installing on my 2015 Ford Fusion SE that I bought this past February now!

Nice Ford! I love this freaking car.

And then there is Honda.

Successfully field tested CarPlay on production hardware in customer vehicles over a year ago. The install was made via a USB stick sent to customers.

Meanwhile the CarPlay advertising shows s Honda head unit and for the last year Honda dealers encouraged customers not to wait but to buy and later install CarPlay with a firmware update.

The customers that bought this b.s. were later screwed when Honda announced they (care about current customer satisfaction and more about selling new cars) are not going to backward support vehicles in the field that have the display audio head unit on which CarPlay was successfully tested.

I'm so hoping for a class action lawsuit.

Same here. I'd get in on that

Same, I've even found online documentation for Honda dealerships with directions to enable Siri Eyes free, but every dealership I talked to said they won't do it.

I think I agree, humans get bored easily and look for distractions. If I'm unfamiliar with a road and it's busy I could have any tune on the radio and I wouldn't notice. On a quiet, familiar road I'm more tempted to start fiddling with radio/cd/heater/seat position/mirrors etc.

Apple also lists Ford as one of its CarPlay partners, but the automaker has yet to announce specific plans for supporting it in upcoming vehicles. The most recent information from Ford indicates CarPlay support will be arriving "relatively soon."

SYNC 3 already supports carplay as well as android auto and is already in some of their vehicles on lots for sale today. This was pointed out in the carplay article you posted the other day too.
