My father-in-law updated his ipad and during the initial set-up he created a 4 digit code. He now calls and says he can't remember his passcode and got locked out after several failed attempts. Anyone know how to recover it or reset this code?

He could connect it to his computer, and do a factory restore. If it was backed up before, that will help with his personal info (but won't give the pass code).

"If you have previously synced your device with iTunes, you may be able to reset the passcode by restoring the device:

Connect the device to the computer with which you normally sync and open iTunes.
Note: If iTunes asks you to enter the passcode, try another computer that you have synced with. Otherwise, go to "If you have never synced your device with iTunes, or you do not have access to a computer" section below.
If the device is still disabled, or if iTunes does not automatically sync your device, sync the device with iTunes.
If you have chosen to encrypt your backup, it will contain the passcode. Disable backup encryption before restoring from backup. Learn more about iOS backups in iTunes.

When the backup and sync is complete, select Restore from Backup and choose the most recent backup of your device.
If you have never synced your device with iTunes, or you do not have access to a computer."

The above is from apple's Support site. Go to discussions.apple.com and type in "Forgot my Password". Lots of good info.

If "find my iPad" is on you'll need to get the iPad in dfu mode and do a restore.

Asking for a friend who has a first generation iPod. Somehow there is a password on it and he can't get into it.
