So what's the likelihood that I'll be able to walk into the Apple Store tomorrow and pick up a 13 Pro Max? I didn't preorder because I only buy unlocked iPhones and I want to trade in my 12 Pro Max to offset the costs.

Apple's website is telling me I won't be able to check stock until tomorrow.
I think it really mostly comes down to location, popularity of the model you want, and determination (refreshing the in-store pickup stock often and being one of the first once it comes online).

If you live in a city with a global flagship store, you may be in luck tomorrow. If you don’t you will probably have to try a bit harder to be one of the first.

I'm in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and there's four Apple Stores. I'm hoping the store I usually go to has some in stock. I plan on getting there by 7:30 am to wait in line to get one.

It looks like they have stopped allowing us to see stock ahead of launch. Now (at least for the model I want here in the USA) it just says:
”Pick up:
Check availability starting 9/24”
Does anyone know when this will unlock on 9/24 and start showing availability? Midnight west coast time? Local store opening time?

In my experience that local pickup can expand to multiple cities, I did with iPhone 12 Pro Max last year, they had none for San Antonio but I could go to Houston or Austin for pickup, managed to score a store in Austin and got them the same day, so it’s not just limited to a city radius…

The nearest Apple Store near MSP, after the four here of course, is in Madison, WI - a 4 hour, 10 minute drive from MSP. I really want an iPhone 13 Pro Max on release day but I'm not desperate enough to drive 8.5 hours round trip for one.

Still no luck here on the east coast. Maybe it will allow us to see inventory when they open up the stores and update stock later this morning?

Yeah, not seeing inventory refresh on Apple's website this morning. I'm heading to the Apple Store in a half hour and hoping they have the 13 Pro Max storage size I want...

Actually I was just able to reserve one for pickup! I would check again.

I see they have the 256GB and 512GB storage sizes of the 13 Pro Max in stock at my Apple Store! I still have to go and wait in line so I can trade in my 12 Pro Max to offset the cost...

You can still choose that you have a trade in when reserving the phone for pickup. I’m not sure how that works with your credit card, maybe they just authorize it but only end up charging less based on how they value your trade in? Either way, good luck, hopefully you find the one you want!

I walked into the mall where the Apple Store is located and there were only two people in line. The Apple Store employee took my reservation, which is in 90 minutes from now, and said I’m guaranteed the 13 Pro Max 256GB in Sierra Blue as long as I’m there at my check in time!

Total fail today for me. I got there at the Crabtree store at 7:30 this morning and reserved 2 pro maxes to buy later and when I got there after waiting an hour in line they had the phones ready but I couldn't buy them in the store with the Apple Card installments. They said I had to buy online for pick up when the stock refreshes as they where capped for the day.
