Format my iPod

Is there a way to format my iPod. I got crap all moved around and stuff and i want to clean it off and reload my music. I went in to disk utility and saw the erase function but I'm not sure if thats what i want to do. Should i do that and then reinstall the iPod software off of software update? Or can I do it at all. Can anyone give me a clue on this?

Download the latest ipod software if you don't have it already. Plug in your ipod and run the ipod updater software. there is a restore option in the software.
