I have a USB external drive that I wish to format, when using disk utility what are the best options to use?

I guess Mac OS Extended (journaled) is the best for the volume format, but what about the other options that show up when you press the options button.

There is GUID and two others listed there.

I only need to use the drive on a Mac.

    Wayne.

What will you be using the drive for? Is it only for Time Machine, or will you be shuttling data from your Mac to another Mac or PC with it?

Mac OS Journaled is the best format for your drive unless you plan to use the drive with a Windows-based PC.
