- On a mechanical HDD you can write forever without anything bad happening.
- On a SSD you would have to write (I beleive) about 30GB a day for 5 years to kill a drive.
Formatting only writes about 100MB (which less than browsing the web for for 5 min).
Reinstalling OS X writes about 4-9GB depending on the version (about the size of a HD movie from iTunes).
EDIT: 30GB a day is for a 80GB SSD. Larger capacities will have higher endurance.
