is it ok and possible to reformat an sd card to mac os instead of fat 32 like with an external hdd

If you only plan on using it in your Mac, sure. It'll most likely cease to function in any digital camera or PMP type device after changing it to HFS+ though, those usually require FAT32 formatting.
