Formatting SSD Before Cloning And Installing

Hello all!

I just bought an SSD to upgrade my 2007 MBP's 5400RPM HD (still going strong after six years!).

Do I need to format the SSD before cloning my current drive to it? Without formatting it, it doesn't show up in Finder but it does show up in Disk Utility. One guide I read said to just do the clone, and then install the SSD. The other says to format the SSD first.

Any help is greatly appreciated! I just don't want to mess this thing up or waste time.
